so this is about my 10th or 11th character i am starting, i wanted to try a battlemage this time since its one of the only builds i havent messed with. my questions are: which schools of magic should i focus on? (im assuming destruction is a must?) what weapons/armor types work well? (again, assuming heavy armor) and what races make interesting battlemages? (im on the fence with argonian and wood elf)

Can really do any type of magic you'd like and same with weapon. If I were doing it I'd probably do Destruction and then a hint of Restoration (healing for stamina as well is nice). If you're doing Light Armor you could add in Alteration but for me I'd do Heavy Armor and save the perks for other things like Smithing/Enchanting/1arm. As far as weapon goes I liked using a 2H Warhammer but with 1H I prefer Axes. Of course might want to look into Artifacts and see if any of them strike your fancy. If you end up doing 1H/Conjuration the Mace of Molag Bal is pretty nice.

Destruction, One hand, Heavy Armor. If you want more of a buff, add in Alteration's flesh spells.

Also, believe it or not Restoration is a huge must, for me. Not for just the healing either. Once you get the perk for Ward absorb and if you don't mind using a shield, I love it in combination with Spell Breaker.

'nother thought for you is your weapon. Will you use the Bound Sword or something else? I'm a huge Battlemage guy myself so do give details of what you have in mind.

One more thing, if you're going with Wood elf or Argonian it doesn't really matter. Either is a very good start for a battle mage (Though Argonians may have the upper hand.) Breton are imo the best battlemages because of their special power Dragonskin.

thanks for the input! good stuff!
i just finished up playing as a breton so im gonna try a race i havent played yet (hence argonian) i would like to start learning how to effectively use wards since ive never really used them. as for a weapon, i was thinking one handed, bound sounds really cool i may go with that (just finished a barbarian build so im sorta sick of 2 handed weapons)

also, is it true that when you perk up destruction it affects destruction-based enchantements? was never quite clear on that...

thanks again!

Using the Atronach Stone will help you practice learning Wards. Just time setting it up right and watch as mages fill your magicka for you while you rush them and slice them up with one hand. The trick to battle mages is balance. It will feel at times like you're not up to par, but when you take into account the defense, and raw power's balance. Trust me, there is nothing better.

Also, go 2/3/2 for Magicka Health and Stamina. It feels weird at first but again, later in game it just flows.

I'm unsure of that destruction thing. I doubt it.

One more thing I would like to add is the power of enchanting and using staffs. You don't necessarily need a large mana pool if you want to use staffs in lieu of actually casting. If you use bound weapons you can trap souls automatically and then use those soul gems to fuel the staff. Having a staff in one hand and using a ward spell in the other is a pretty interesting play style.
