Why can't you fight while on horseback?

The most annoying part of Skyrim (in my opinion) is having to get off your horse whenever something attacks you... They should have Horse riding as a skill, with perks...

Perks that allow you to fight or cast magic from horse back...

As you level up in your 'Horse' skill you can use a lance (as if jousting), or fire arrows directly behind you as you retreat (both Atilla the Hun and Ghenghis Kahn's strategy for dealing with overwhelming odds)...

It would make fighting a frost or elder dragon that much more epic... not to mention the fun you could have when dealing with bandits.

They also failed when it comes to fighting underwater. You can kill dragons but are defenceless
Against those pesky slaughter fish.

Fighting on a horse sucked in all the games that have it. Its clunky, frustrating and its always smarter to get off the horse. I just figured it's not in Skyrim because they didn't want to waste time on reinventing how you would effectively fight from horseback. Only way I see it happening is if they can create a control scheme like idk StarFox 64 where you press a combo of buttons to do a u-turn and the horse is in a consistent speed at all times.

Shooting arrows from horseback should be a no brainer. I wish some npcs would ride on horseback. It was great fun in rdr to place a headshot on a galloping horse and watch it cartwheel.

I still don't know why horses are able to report crimes. Is this Mr. Ed? How the f is he telling the guards that I cut down some Thalmor patrol.

I thought they did it pretty well in Red Dead Redemption, Even though that's mainly a shooting based game.
Sacred2 also had fighting from horseback. You lost your "special attacks" while mounted, but they were replaced by the horses special abilities such as charging and rearing to smack things with it's hooves. Your own melee weapons, ranged weapons or spells worked the exact same as while you were on foot. It was pretty seamless really.

Edit: The inability to even gather ingredients while mounted really irks me as well. Especially if you are on a borrowed mount. If I get off for 5 seconds to gather a few herbs, I've got to chase the horse 50 feet down the road to get back on. Honestly, I just walk the vast majority of the time. The horse is just a hassle.

on of the things that I find annoying while on horseback is that npc's that need to talk to you won't until you're dismounted.

I had some thug run up to me while I was riding and when I stopped, he just stood there.
As soon as I dismounted he proceeded to tell me he had a message from someone and tried to kill me. Silly thug.

Such small things that make the game a lot better if it was done right.

"Borrowed" mount? :p

It makes perfect sense not to be able to forage from way up on a horse.

Not stolen - just borrowed. (The ones you can hop on that you do not own, but do not say "steal".) The fact that they start walking back to where you got on them the very second you dismount is quite annoying. Like I said, I rarely ride my own horse because I hate getting on and off it constantly, but occasionally I will arrive at a camp someplace only to be sent to another place and if I am in a hurry, I will hop on one of these "free" horses.

As far as foraging, I understand not being able to pick a flower in the ground perhaps, but there are plenty of berries and such that you forage from trees as tall or taller than the horse. No reason you couldn't pick them off the branches without dismounting.

It's not a huge complaint - I love the game for the most part - but the whole horse thing is very poorly done.

Remember the game GUN?
You could fight from horseback in that game it was awesome...

Best part of that game was when you would just rain arrows on someone as you approached full speed on a horse and then flew passed them and continued to rain arrows on someone as you rode away...

just imagine if they had Red Dead Redemptions horse system on this game. wow that would just be amazing. they should really make it so you can atleast use a bow while on horseback. and also while they are at it, make it so our horses do not try to fight for us, that is annoying as hell to have your horse charge into battle and get its butt kicked. and finally when we dismount our horse it should stay there, not roam around the mountains and get lost. either that or let us call the horse back like in Red Dead.

Also, it is kindof irritating sometimes when your follower is not behind you. I have become aware that they will not hop down cliffs and whatnot, but half of the time you turn around and they are not there. Usually it's about 10 seconds and then you see them trotting over to you.

Your movement speed is generally faster than followers. The more distance you put between the two of you the more likely their pathing is to glitch. They will follow your path pretty well if you keep them close to you.
