i was playing on my thief character and i was attacked by 3 thugs and one of them had a contract
signed dorthe.

i stole from her house about a month ago (game time) when no one was inside and somehow the little girl found out i stole from her house

That can happen sometimes. Usually that means the person, (In this case Dorthe < SP?) was part of some group or faction such as the dark brotherhood most likely. They send mercenaries after you to kill you on the sole fact that you stole something from their house.

Shows what the marks that you can see carved on houses mean, the 'Protected' one could be relevant to this.
