I've never really tried Illusion because it seems complicated, but this post makes me not want to try at all, haha. Definitely seems like a lot of effort that yields little reward, unless you pair it correctly with other offensive attacks. The more simple the better for me.
AS88 won't be pleased with this development...

You're damned right I'm not pleased!
It's impossible for AS88 to be displeased with me. :p If he can give me a simple illusion build that he'll know I can have fun with, I'll give it a go. Otherwise.... pass.
A simple Illusion build? Well how about any build you've ever used, which also uses Fury spells to soften up their enemies, or a sneak build which cast Muffle before scope out who you wanted to attack first?

And as Faralda says at the College of Winterhold

"The school of illusion can be quite influential. Kings have risen to power because of it, and empires have been razed with it"

Illusion is an essential part of a lot of my characters, some of which are among my favourites.

Also, there's a few excellent builds on theskyrimblog that might give you some ideas. Here's just a few that came to mind from my bookmarks.

Oh I see... Faralda says it's good so it must be. What the hell was I thinking??? ;)

Hahah, sorry for providing a range of sources, including an expert wizard :p

If i need quiet casting, I cast fury on deer so they will attack me, then I kill them with a familiar, flames, or a weapon, depending on what I want to level first. I never thought about it before, but you could probably recalm it before killing it for twice the illusion experience. That might be annoying on console (I don't remember how the hotkeys worked)

Fury Calm Backstab Smithing would be an awesome combo for a nightblade.

Calm Familiar Fury for conjuration /illusion with time for regen if needed

I have a question. While I realize that illusion can be very helpful in avoiding conflict, why would you want to? Isn't it rather boring to go through a game without any sort of combat going on? What is the point in being a hero (or villain for that matter) if you never have to fight?

Just my thought. I don't know if I could handle being some peaceful treehugger in a world full of things trying to kill me. I would always be so, so sad...
Of course, now that I think about it, it certainly would be a challenge, given my personality to actually attempt such a playthrough. Of course it would make being Dragonborn extremely difficult!

I'll assume you have seen this series, but I'll link it just the same.

This playthrough was one of the only reasons I ever actually wanted to try an Illusion-based, pacifist character.

See now, I'm the opposite. I've attempted similar builds... pacifist Wood Elf that lives at the Alchemist's Shack and crashes hunting camps. Friend to all animals and avoider of the undead. Then I woke up with the controller in my hand and rerolled.

On my thief/assassin character I was trying to get illusion up but I don't really find that it'd be that useful, given that I already have sneak at 100, with Nightingale and Dark Brotherhood Armor, Cicero's Hat (+35% sneak), and Nightweaver's Band (+10% sneak).

But the main reason it's not as useful for me now is because I opted to get Nightingale Subterfuge, which HAS been useful for me.

Subterfuge isn't limited to enemy level, I don't think, so you can use it on an enemy and it seems that usually they'll hack and slash their friends, assuming there are some there. Otherwise I can just snipe him with my Nightingale Bow or slit his throat with the Blade of Woe.

However Illusion could be helpful for Thief/Assassin characters otherwise, I suppose.

Isn't there a perk in Illusion that makes all shouts or spells or powers or something silent? That may be nice.

Yep, Quiet Casting about halfway up the right side of the tree.

(Also, could you trim your sig down a little, please?)

ok guys be honest how hot is Lydia on a scale of 1 to 10

Pfft, you're bringing up Lydia? How 'bout Hroki...now she is hawt! Just the other day I was watching my brother play while I was drawing, he happened across Hroki in Markarth, and was like "wow..." and then went to the inventory and put on the amulet of Mara...

Sorry to tell ya Bjorn but Hroki's technically considered underage.;)

Lydia? Ew..3/10. My monies on Annekka(think I fluffed up) She be one fine lady.

Don't understand the hate for Illusion. Like Dagmar said, its crowd control. Like all other schools,it's viablely effective if used correctly.Never really had any problems using it,its used in almost every build I create.

Lies!
Anyways it seems like the silent casting perk would be very useful to any mage, perhaps more for destructo-mages because they can fling a fireball that blasts an enemy down the entire hallway, but a nearby enemy won't know. Or so I assume. Maybe it still depends on your sneak skill.
I think that the Clairvoyance spell can be helpful at times, and that's under Illusion.
Illusion can be helpful for sneaky types of course in that if there's a band of bandits, for example, all in the same place-you can cast it on one of them and slip into the shadows, while they attack each other. I got Nightingale Subterfuge power for this reason, and while it's not technically under any school of magic, I still consider it part of Illusion, as it is essentially fury, though I'm not sure there's a level cap.

Nightingale Subterfuge is a once a day thing though.Quiet casting does just that, weither or not you're caught "after" casting depends on your sneak. If you're unseen then cast you're good until someone sees "you" or you make yourself known.

Hence why I correctly called it a power. I'm thinking about getting the Fury spell though, and getting it to be effective at decent levels, so I can use the fury-like effect both from Subterfuge and Fury, in the same day, without having to wait 24 hours after using it.

Skip fury.Use muffle to get illusion to 40-50 and buy frenzy.effects higher targets and AoE.
