I agree, but it takes longer. I like to get rich quick! I don't have any speech on one of my characters and she's still at 40K+ at level 30 even after buying breezehome, honey house (or whatever it's called in Riften), Lakeview manor and furnishing all of them (and building Lakeview of course). If you invest in the speech perks it just makes it easier to do everything, including be able to sell stolen items without joining the TG and getting an extra 2K on to your merchants, bribe and intimidate as well as persuade easily. You're right that it's not a necessity, I just like to get closer to the value when I sell rather than sell a 1K piece of Orcish armor for 250. Maybe it's just me.

If you are in it for the RP, I've never seen a wealthy blacksmith or farrier. It is a labor of love.

Although that blacksmith in Solitude has one friggin sweet house!

Well it makes sense that the master blacksmith to the Imperial Army in Skyrim would be rich.

I always find all the Barenziah stones . After that I never loot any gear off any NPC . I just sell the emeralds , and all the others for $$$ ... I had one Bosmer Toon that when I retired him had made 2 Million G off nothing but Gems . Man it's a hard thing being lvl 10 again and being flat broke. I never take any speechcraft perks like ColleenG said ...

Every build I make uses the first three Speech perks. Merchant is a must for me if only just to save time. Three perk points to be able to sell anything to anyone is way worth it for all my builds.
