Hi people, it's time to upgrade my laptop and I'm thinking of getting this machine, the i7 2.66GHz April 2010 MBP with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB. I'll install either WinXP or Win7 on it to play Skyrim.

A desktop PC is not an option for various reasons.

What do folks think or know about this machine running Skyrim?

Thanks

I think it'll be fine. I run mine on an i5 with a standard built in Intel HD graphics on high and it doesn't miss a beat. Even ultra is beautiful and ultra only lags when I run on a horse outside.

Seriously? You run yours on a laptop with an integrated intel hd graphics card on high?

Well according to the specs of someone who has a very similar laptop to you i'm thinking you'll only get to play on medium settings.

Yea, Hope, the issue here is that he is GOING to be getting that laptop, not that he has it already :p. So, he can't test what he doesn't have yet.

Thanks folks, can't wait! I figured If I could play on my old MBP with 128MB VideoRAM with little lag on low settings I should be alright with that machine.

Dead serious! I was pretty shocked too. The only issue I ever had was the antialiasing, even on medium, totally blurred any fire light source all over the screen. Besides if I turn FXAA on there is no difference to me with or without the antialiasing. Otherwise every setting works smoothly without fail. I am extremely impressed with it.

Should be fine. I honestly prefer gaming on my MacBook Pro over my desktop, even though technically the desktop performance should be better the Mac seems to run it best. Even with just standard hardware my Mac runs very nice, and it's a few years old. You'll be fine.

Thanks Ixtyr, is there any advantage to using windows 7 over XP ?

(will only install windows to play Skyrim and whatever may be next)

There's somewhat of an advantage. You will get a slight FPS boost according to benchmarks. Also, I believe Windows XP doesn't support DX10 or greater. The difference from DX9 is negligible, but still it is something to consider.

Yeah, use 7. I'm a Mac purist and I loathe Windows in general, but 7 Professional is the one to go with. Use OS X for everything other than gaming, because it's infinitely better.

Yea, that's all spectacle and biased. Honestly, Linux is the best and that's a fact. Also, you can use Windows 7 Ultimate and be perfectly fine too, you don't have to use Professional.
