Warning: This is most definitely a rant. This incident pissed me off really badly though, and I needed to get it off my chest. So, here I am.

I hate irresponsible pet owners. This morning I spent about 45 minutes playing puppy-rescuer before work.

I had just walked my dogs, and I was walking to the dumpster to throw away their business, when I saw my neighbor's puppy standing in the middle of the street. I've seen the puppy out before, but usually the owner is with it. Bear in mind this little darling can't be any older than three months old. So I got the pup to trust me enough to follow me to its owner's front door. No answer. So I decided to just put it back on the patio, which I felt bad for, because the patio was covered in pee and poop (ugh). I came back outside about 15 minutes later to check on it; low and behold, it was out again. I checked the collar and found a phone number, so I called the owner. Here's how the conversation went:

Me: Do you live at unit 62?
Her: Yes, why?
Me: Uh, I'm outside with your dog.
Her: Oh, he's almost big enough to not get out.
Me: ... Okay, but I'm kind of concerned about his safety.
Her: Well I'm at work. I'll try to have someone stop by. But he does this a lot, and usually stays close by.
Me: Um. Ok. Well I guess I'll just put him on the patio.

So, I go back to the patio and barricade it from the inside with these little kid chairs that were sitting out there (all the while trying to ignore the barking from the two older dogs that were up on the upstairs patio). I then noticed the poor thing had no water, so I went back home and put some in a Tupperware bowl. Then I took my folding table and put it up against the gate, to hopefully help keep the pup from slipping through again.

I gladly called in late to work for this, 'cause I felt so bad for the puppy. I just don't get people. Don't get an animal unless you are responsible enough to handle it properly. I'm going to call Animal Control if this happens again.

How would you guys have acted in this situation? I wasn't really sure what to do.

I wish I could. Gah. I also wish I could just take the puppy and have it live with me. I <3 dogs, and seeing that this morning was heart-breaking.

I would adopt a bunch of dogs if I could. I have two dogs currently, my Pug and my chihuahua, the chihuahua I adopted when i was like six or seven because someone abused it when it was only 3 months. The Vet said the guy placed it outside of his house and tried to kick it when they rescued it. I wanted to tackle the guy.

My dog just died Friday. I had to put him to sleep, after he had gone through the beginnings of congestive heart failure, and had a severe stroke. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through. I raised him from the time he was a puppy, walked him, potty-trained him, played with him, took care of him, bathed him at least once every two weeks even though he hated it, etc. He was my best friend and it was like losing a child.

I think people who abuse or neglect animals will have a special place in Hell. Many times I've thought about hogtying Michael Vick if I got the chance, then pouring gravy all over him, and throwing him into a pin full of rescued pit bulls.

I likely would have done the same as you. My cat got out of my house a few months ago (knocked the screen out of a window somehow), and was gone for 2 days. I was worried sick the whole time. I kept hoping to get a phone call from someone, saying they found him. Luckily the fat bastard came back on his own, but still.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog  I have two dogs (one is a pit bull mix so I quite like your Mike Vick idea) and I can't imagine losing eitherof them. RIP pup.

Thank you very much. His name was Max and he was an American Bulldog. Just think English Bulldog but bigger, like 90 pounds of muscle. We lost his mate Coco in September of 2011. She was a bird dog. They had the best life possible here, and now they are together once again.

I actually had a dream a couple of days before Max died, where Coco walked up to Max and hugged him (the way a dog would, not a person). Looking back on it, it was her way of telling me that is was time for Max to come with her, and that he wouldn't be alone. <3

I've had quite a few animal rescuing stories, so I know how it is... that said, I'd have kept the dog & marched straight over telling the owner when he got home that the pup now belonged to me (not just saying this, I've done something similar in other situations).
