I am playing through as a pure mage, something I have only done once before, and this time I am investing properly in Illusion. I have been very surprised at how much utility and how effective this school of magic is, and can't believe I haven't gone this route before in 8+ years of playing. This will likely lead to my next character being a stealth character that actually uses Illusion, am now interested to try this.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, finally trying a particular skill out and finding themselves pleasantly surprised?

I think this is one of the hardest things to do with Illusion
using muffle spell only when your sneaking adds immersion to the game,
casting it like mad just for the levels is not immersive

I like the idea you are experimenting and playing it your own way, if the game feels right for you then your on the right path.

I have never done a full mage playthrough, it's not that I have never wanted to its gust that on legendary a mage is unplayable ( the stats don't add up correctly)

honestly its an art mastering illusion and I think it can provide some exiting game play, I think you should go for it and see where it takes you

My fascination is with blocking ... I have learned to do amazing things with this skill

just be amazed at what the game teaches you ...

I think trying to play as pure mage is difficult, I gave it ago a few years back, I played on a Xbox 360 then, so no mods. I found it way to difficult as my magic spells were not doing much if any damage, so I gave up.

Now I use mods i'm yet to try a pure mage character again.

I find Calm and Fury are extremely useful if you work up the illusion tree. Fury is great for thinning out groups of bandits, etc.. while Calm will let me get thru an area I otherwise couldn't.

I do certainly find it is a harder playthrough going pure mage. @Sah is certainly correct about it not scaling properly and I can see how high difficulty it would become unplayable. I will say adding illusion properly has been a massive help as I am able to turn most enemies into my own combat tools. The stack of abilities on fury and calm in particular make it very useful, not just entertaining, though it is! The AOE fury cast with silent casting makes whole rooms wipe themselves out, or large groups hang up on the boss who is often the only unaffected one.
