Hey, I am "fairly" new to this game. I got my daughter a new Xbox One so I started playing this on her old 360 about two weeks ago. I now have my own Xbox One now so I am about to start over since nothing transfers from 360 to One. I have been playing an Orc because of the race ability "berserker rage" but, I'm not sure that should be the race I choose this time. I typically like playing the caster/ranger role and have built up Lydia's armor and one hand weapon/shield so she can tank and I can heal and do damage from a more distant position. I really like using the archery which is more in line with a ranger race but I also like being able to summon the flame atronach, raise zombie, and heals which is in the mage race line. I don't know anything about the story line part of the game because I've just been running around doing ALL of the quest I run across and have not been paying much attention to that aspect of the game. Any guidance on race for that type of play style and how race effects the story line would be fantastic. Thanks!

Unless you have a preference, it really doesn't matter what race you pick. Altmer have a massive magic regen ability as their racial special. Perhaps that. Otherwise go breton. No regen but their dragonskin lets them resist magic damange.

Are there not any who have extra bow skills?

I don't think so. Bow skill is generally just by levelling up the archery perk tree. I think there might be some rings/amulets you can acquire. There are also potions, but those are only temporary, as you could guess.

I think Wood Elves start with an advantage.

The starting skill boost is informative for what skills each race tend to be good at. Bosmer (wood elves) start with a primary boost to Archery. However, in actual gameplay, the starting skill bonus is negligible. The primary skill is boosted to 25, secondary skills to 20, and the rest start at 15. However, you can get pretty much any skill to 25 in twenty minutes, some even quicker. You could probably have EVERY skill at 25 within an hour if you know the training techniques.

The special abilities are fixed, but most of them are cosmetic. The two with substantial impact on the game are the ones Drell mentioned: Altmer and Breton. The Breton 25% magic resist and 50% absorb are probably the two most powerful inherent skills in the game. When combined with the Atronach stone, they can make a Breton completely impervious to magic with unlimited casting for one minute. Altmer permanent increase of 50 Magicka is very good too, although realizes the most benefit for NON-spellcasters ironically. Spellcasters will focus on raising Magicka every level or two, and the extra 50 quickly becomes negligible, but for a warrior who focuses on stamina and health, the extra 50 will always allow an few extra seconds of healing.

If you want to fool around with unarmed fighting styles, go with Khajiit. Everyone else sucks at it.

All the other races are essentially just differentiated by looks and RP background, with special abilities that are either worthless or easily replicated with enchantments or perks early in the game.

I started 2 different toons. An orc and an imperial. I have found the orc ability most useful when fighting a group of mobs or a dragon. The reduction of incoming dmg and increased dmg output is nice so I use less potions and don't need to constantly switch to heals. I haven't found a lot of uses for the imperials "voice of the emperor" ability but I have noticed that it is more powerful than any of the current "calm" spells I currently have and has not been resisted by anything I have used it for so far unlike the spells. It has come in handy when being attacked by many mobs at once to allow a hasty exit and regroup or simply just to pass through a camp of forsworn like on the way to skyhaven temple. It does allow the dragonborn to avoid having to fight large groups of NPC's or stop the battle midway through to allow health, stamina and magicka regen if you're out of potions but I don't think it works on animals (haven't tried it yet). So far, it's been a toss up between the two of the abilities that I like most. They have both been useful to a degree if they are used like they were designed for. I think most people think some of the abilities are useless because they don't know or understand how to use them correctly or what they were designed for. I have seen post saying the "voice of the emperor" was useless because the dragonborn has spells that do the same thing. So far, I have found that to be inaccurate because as I stated, it is more powerful and has yet to be resisted unlike the "calm" spells that get resisted by higher lvl NPC's. I am only about 2/3 through the playthrough with both toons and plan to start a couple other toons just for testing abilities and difference in storylines but so far, the storyline between the two toons I'm currently playing are not much different.

I don't believe there are any significant differences in storyline based on race: mostly it's just that you get an occasional race-specific greeting or additional dialogue option.

Another racial ability to try is the Redguard stamina boost. Coupled with the light armor perk Wind Walker, you can recover stamina like crazy, and build around power-attacks. This goes extremely well with dual wielding, and paired scimitars for the Redguard RP and you've got a kill dervish-type character.
