So as I get deeper into the game and start researching all the available quests and content I wonder if not participating in the Civil War quest will be an issue. I want to play as much content as possible. I already am bummed about all the available content I missed out from the Dark Brotherhood quest line when I destroyed them since I am role playing a good character. I don’t want to choose a side in the Civil War but if that questline is required in some fashion for the main quest and just for more playable content I will.
Has anyone else played the game without choosing sides?

Any insight and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Jimmy

Here's another question... if you decided on a side in the Civil War, what level were you at when you did and begun the questline?

Well that depends on a couple of things. First, are you going for a completionist playthrough, or just enjoying the game abd doing whatever?

A bit of both actually. I’m not doing the theives guild or Dark Brotherhood quest lines due to role playing a good character. Really just enjoying playing the game. It’s not important to me to get the quests done that require “evil” tendencies or actions with this character. But I also love quests and see all the stuff in the Civil War quest lines. Also thought I read somewhere in Wiki that the main quest is affected my the Civil War outcome. If I can finish main quest I suppose I would not choose sides. But I could see my Nord maybe choosing Storm Cloaks so going through it I might like to do.
Can the main quest be completed without the Civil War? And is there enough content to just keep going without finishing these main quests?

well hello again.... so, there is 2 sides the imperials and the stormcloaks, the imperials are ran by general tullius and the stormcloaks are ran by ulfric stormcloak and glamour (I think) stone-fist (not so sure on the first name but positive on the last name) I have never been on the imperials but if you go to the stormcloaks ulfric will tell you to talk to his general and he will tell you to go kill a ice wraith, go kill the ice wraith and come back, then you and a couple of stormcloaks will go to a barrow and get the jagged crown... WARNING... throughout the civil war questlines for both the imperials and stormcloaks you will be killing a lot of people.... anyways go clear out the barrow, retrieve the jagged crown and give it to jarl ulfric, afterward he will tell you to give his war axe to jarl balgruuf, give it to balgruuf, and the jarl of whiterun will decline, think it is an act of war, and join the imperials, tell the jarl ulfric and ulfric will tell you to join a attacking force to whiterun (note: to get this far you have to complete dragon rising) attack whiterun and get to dragonsreach, after your in dragonsreach the jarl will attack you until vignar grey-mane appears and tells jarl balgruuf that this is fruitless and to stop fighting, balgruuf stops and vignar grey-mane is now jarl of whiterun, afterward, ulfric tells you to attack a fortress full of imperials, you and a couple of stormcloaks will kill them all, ulfric tells you to go do it again with another fort filled with imperials, go do that and go back to ulfric, he will tell you we are attacking solitude to kill general tullius, go to solitude, fight your way up to the blue palace and wait till ulfric and stone-fist (forgot his first name) and ulfric will ask if you want to kill tullius or do you want him to, pick one and then the civil war will be over.

Thanks Gameknight. I actually had a good read last night reading Wiki’s history and explanation about the Civil War. Felt like I was reading a history book. Lol
I did Dragon Rising already. That was probably the first major quest I did. So are you still able to complete the main quest if you don’t do the Civil War?
If I do the Civil War I’ll join the Storm Cloaks. This will be weird since my home is in Whiterun. Does this quest mess up my access to Breezehome at all?

no, but it will be a little bit harder to get to for a little bit after the quest, BUT become thane in all 9 holds first, for some jarls will hate you and wont give you thaneship afterward

Oh man, just trying to be thane of all the holds seems like a huge quest line in and of itself. At level 22 I’m only thane of Whiterun, Falkreath and one of the northern ones that starts with an M ... I think. Lol I was hardly there for much and the Jarl was on old lady. I remember seeing her at the Thalmor Embassy when I infiltrated it.
So I only have 3 and when done with my current quest I’ll start talking to Jarls of the other holds. I did not know you could be thane of all of them.
Yeah that does sound like a lot of work and content.
Thanks for the tip!

yea... but im just lvl 26 and I have 6 of them, you need 8
Wow, I'm level 25 and have only seen Miraak. I take it there are a bunch of quests I have just not come upon yet that lead to these priests?

ps.... hey Gameknight, on a side note can you check this out?
https://skyrimforum.com/sf/threads/help-with-path-of-knowledge-quest-issue.145231/
Its an issue I am having with the Path of Knowledge quest and figure you probably have already gone through what I am experiencing with this or can at least let me know what I did wrong?

Thanks!
Jimmy

oh by the way if you want to become super op you should find all the dragon priest masks, there helpful as frick
But mega, muy hard priests to kill to get them right?

Nah. Just get armor that's got good elemental resistance, prepare to take a few fireballs or lightning bolts to the face, and you can whip most of them pretty easily. The only ones I'd say watch out for are both tied to major questlines -- MOROKEI (College of Winterhold - STAFF OF MAGNUS quest) and NAHKRIIN (Main quest) (Also, these are the only 2 DP's that don't pop out of coffins -- they're ready to fight when you get to them ... beware. Morokei is a shock-based priest, and Nahkriin can - and DOES - use all 3 elements' most powerful projectile spells.)

Thanks for all the help BostonBGreen!
So regarding good buff armor, was most of yours found? Bought? Smithed? I am only able to play casually with not much free time on my hands. So I am basically just going through whatever quest seems most fun at the moment. But I can devote time to armor building/questing/buying i guess. I bet most players would laugh at the armor I wear at level 26.
Right now I am stuck at the end of the Path of Knowledge quest where I read the book that Neloth got me too and I have to fight through the seekers and lurkers on Apocrypha. Stuck getting my butt kicked there atm. I'll drop the difficulty and try to plow through and eventually get through I am sure. Then decide what to do next. I want to join the Civil War as a Storm Cloak since I have decided all Imperial buttheads must die! They got in my way one time too many. lol
Though trying to be a Thane of all 9 holds before doing the Civil War quest might take a while.

You CAN'T be a Thane of all NINE holds until after the quest "Liberation of Skyrim" (if, as you've decided, you're a true Son of Skyrim) or "Unification of Skyrim" (if you're one of those Imperial milk-drinkers...) is over.
As for armor (and my "stop anything in its tracks and 1-shot a giant or mammoth" bow), mine are from mods. "Forsaken Gear", "Exploding Arrows/Firework Arrows", "Mehrune's Razor Reborn", "Rayne the Lycaness", "Aetherium Unlimited", "Master of Archery: Dawnbreaker Bow" and "Dragonborn DLC is Part of Skyrim" (brings Solstheim enemies and ingredients to the mainland of Skyrim!)

(I should add one caveat to this reply - I'm on PC. I don't know if ALL these mods exist on other platforms.)

I did not know there was a Liberation of Skyrim quest. Is that quest from a mod? Yeah I am playing on PS4 and I also decided I want to play without mods so I can get PS4 achievement trophies. I did start with unlimited weight carrying ring but then noticed it stops achievements and creates a different save so I went back and turned it off. So it’s all just game/quest armor for me. Where I am at in Apocrypha I am getting my arse handed to me. I found a great YouTube walkthrough but noticed the guy doing it is lvl 44! Think I’m in over my head at 26. But now I’m stuck in it. Will just have to chip away at the stone for a while to get through it. Thank God you can save at any time.
So I just wanted to try and be thane of all the holds before I side with the Stormcloaks and do the Civil War quest and piss half of them off.

Again -- can't be thane of Windhelm until AFTER the war.
Liberation (or Unification) is the last quest before you can apply for Thanedom.

Ok so let me ask you this... is it even worth it to try to be Thane of whatever Holds I can though before doing the Civil War quest? Is there going to be Jarls that will be sour on me and halt quests when I side with the Storm Cloaks? Honestly as much playable content as there is I’m not sure I will really worry about that though.

Thanedom will be revoked in a few, but it's not a big deal - just do one little quest for the Jarl and help a few people again.
