Hello folks,

So new to this game and loving it. I am currently playing a Nord warrior going 2 handed and casting healing spells. I am playing a lawful good chtr not murdering or stealing but only helping and killing all things evil.
Then I saw Spectre of Skyrim's Paladin Guide and started to wonder... I may want to switch to one handed and follow his Paladin guide. It is about what I was going for other than 1 handed and shield vs 2 handed. Recently I Started using healing spells in my left hand and grabbing an enchanted axe when I do or a Staff of the Familiar in the right hand. Also while in The Ratway it was so dark I decided carrying a torch was a good idea and used a one hander then too. I actually enjoyed it. And I have some sweet shields stashed away in Breeze Home that I just couldn't bring myself to sell.
I wonder... is lvl 17 too late to switch up? I have spent a lot of perks in 2 handed. I am fine starting another character though. Just figured if not a big deal I would switch if it wasn't a big hassle or just not recommended by the gurus.

Can any of you experienced adventurers give a little insight or advice on this?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks for reading and blessings from SE MI.

Level 17 is still pretty early game. If You'll just have a tougher time taking down leveled enemies with one handed at first, but it should level up pretty fast.

Thanks for the advice. I still wonder about perks. I read and hear so much about being careful not to blow perks as they get harder to come by at later levels. I have a ton (for early level) plowed into 2 handed.
So I just killed Astrid and since I had her dagger and shroud armor I went into the Sanctuary wearing all that to try and do the sneak, back stab Assassin thing. Whoa... I had to back out after couple tries only killing first 2 guys. I think I could do it but if I got into a mix of more than a couple guys at once I’d be dead. You weren’t kidding about it being a lot harder to kill guys with weak 1 handed. I am switching back to full steel armor, (174 ac vs less than 90) grabbing my enchanted great sword and going back for the appropriate slaughter.
It kills me though... I have some sweet shields and one handed weapons stashed in my home. If the perks aren’t too much of a loss... how many levels do you think it would take to get back up to butt kicking status? I could always spend some time in lower level caves a while and spend some cash on training.
Really don’t mind starting over. I love this game. But dang I hate not using the cool loot I been hoarding. Lol
Your thoughts?

Well as far as I know enemies level with you, but if you want to level one handed I'd recommend going after small bandit camps, or running through some of the begginning draugr tombs. Maybe grab a companion so you don't get overwhelmed.

Yeah the enemies still level with you. I wonder how many dungeon crawls aren’t quest specific. I tried to walk into one close to Whiterun and couldn’t. Looked it up and saw it doesn’t open until one of the Companions quests pops. I was wondering if there is much out there other than random wandering monsters or creatures to kill and up skills with. Are there specific tombs that you recall that aren’t quest linked?
And yeah, I’ve always had a housecarl running with me. Though they can be a pain sometimes. “Follower management” should be a skill you get perks for. Lol

ok so... I did the same thing at level 22 but I went from a dual wielder to a 2 handed weapons user because of the ebony blade, for those who dont know what the ebony blade is it is a daedric artifact and it has a base damage of about 20 but the enchantment is that you absorb health from those you hit, also the enchantment never runs out...
the annoying part about the ebony blade is that you have to kill friendly NPCs to increase the enchantment, to max it out you have to kill 8 of them, on PC you can just hit ~ then click on the dead NPC use the resurrect console command and kill them agian and agian till you have killed them 8 times, afterward I was level 23 killing level 32 giants.
BUT I still had 8 perk points in one handed weapons... what you have to do is go if you have the dragonborn DLC is kill miraak and open the black book, if you look around you will see the skill trees around, you click on the one you want to clear, it will take one dragon soul by the way, and it will take all the perk points away from it... though you will still have the levels for it those will not go away unless you max it out to legendary.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I read about the Ebony Blade and decided since I am role playing a good character I did not want to kill any NPC's. So the role playing thing makes it a bit more challenging but that's ok. I am on PS4 console so the PC console commands are not an option.
Now I am following the quest that gets me to the black book and I meet Miraak but get sent back and the quest is still ongoing. What level were you when you actually got to fight him? How much farther past the point of finding his source of power on Solstiem did you actually have to battle him?

Thanks again for your advice!

so... afterward you need to go and talk to the skaal shaman and he will tell you to talk to the wizard that lives in a big ass mushroom, after you talk with him, you and him will go to a nearby dwarven, or dwemer ruin complete that and read the black book, but beware, because doing so will send you to apocrafa the hermaeus mora the daedric prince of knowledge and there will be 2 types of enemies: lurkers and seekers, the seekers will use ranged attacks and the lurkers will use melee attacks but will shoot balls of tentacles and poison at you, and dont walk in the green water as it will kill you VERY fast, continue down through and open the black book, afterward hermaeus mora will talk to you and send you back to solstheim to get the secrets of the skaal, after you leave the dwemer ruins however, a named dragon will appear and attack you, so watch out!
go back to skaal village and ask the shaman about the secrets of the skaal and he will talk to you for a bit but afterward he will take the black book and open it, hermaeus mora will kill him and teach you the last word, you will need a dragon soul to activate each word of the bend will shout, before you kill miraak I HIGHLY suggest you get to at least level 25 before you do this as he is the dragonborn DLC final boss after karstaag, open the black book and continue till you get to the last area kill the seekers and learn the last word on the word wall, and a dragon will appear, use the bend will shout on him and he will carry you to miraak, this is where it gets hard, afterward miraak will attack you with his sword staff and multiple shouts and spells, you will have to kill him 3 or 4 times untill there are no more dragons left for him to absorb there souls, after you get him down to at least 10% health he will use the become ethereal shout and be invulnerable until fully healed, after the 3 time when hermaeus mora kills him, afterward the book will appear in the middle and you can use it,

hope this was helpful

Whoa... and I mean... whoa. I am surprised meeting Miraak what seems early in the game. Meeting him obviously isn’t the end of the main quest right? I got to lvl 20 since first posting this during my time late night after family all put to bed. That’s when I play. Knowing this was probably going to get kinda heavy I had already decided to do other quests before getting back to this one so I will follow your advice to wait level up before trying all that madness.
I actually decided to start doing alchemy to make vegetable soup. Had no clue it’s properties. I don’t have much in the way of enchanted armor and switching to one handed weapons I want to build that up also. I did one of the “kill the bandit leader” quests last night and initially had my arse handed to me. Still wondering if switching to one handed is the best idea. 2 handed is over 60. Though I know I will get 1 hand up there too. Dawnbreaker is just so sweet against undead.
So I want to start cooking, alchemy, enchanting and smithing. Plan was to learn how to use those skills and build them up. Do Dawngaurd and Companions quests and level up. Then I’ll think about Miraak.

Thanks so much for the explanation and tutorial! Huge help knowing what I am in for when I do decide to head that way.

by the way miraak IS the last part of the dragonborn DLC except for karstaag who is the hardest boss in all of the DLCs and the game itself he is fricking HARD with more than 4000 health and can kill you in 1 or 2 hits

Oh great... Looking sooo forward to facing him! So I have to ask... exactly what does DLC stand for? I read that reference in so many posts and online information about Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Is the "Dragonborn DLC" referencing the MAIN quest in the game? This part confuses me a bit. I feel at only level 20 and maybe meeting him at or around 25-ish... that seems a bit soon to be finishing the main point of the game?

ha ha lol... DLC means downloadable content, or DLC, no the main part of the game is killing alduin, and finishing the civil war questline to beat the main part of the game, there's also doing the 15 daedric quests along with the thieves guild, and the dark brotherhood, finding all 8 dragon priest masks, or doing the college of winterhold quests.

Oh good. I also found the lovely never ending world of mods too! I won’t play with any with this first character but I see there are mods that actually add playable content like more dungeon crawls so that’s good also.
I’ll look up the daedric quests. The Civil War questline... if I decide to not choose a side does that mean I won’t be able to do those quests? I had forgotten all about Alduin.

I used to be an Evercrackhead like 20 years ago playing 12 to 14 hours at a time until I was rehabilitated. Lol
But now I am enjoying this game every bit as much, if not more. This could be a bad thing. Heh
Thanks so much for all your time and advice. I really appreciate it.
