I don't know how good your lockpicking and sneak skill is on your character, but for mine, I always max out both and deck out their perks as well, so I can easily sneak past his guards bloodlessly, and pick the lock on the safe as well.

Picking the locks is no problem, but the sneaking I guess I just need work on. (Also, I notice that if you're just looting items in the room he's in, Aringoth is NOT HOSTILE. Weird, considering I've robbed him blind and killed all his thugs ... But the second you try to get his key from him, he goes nuts)

Ok, personally, I've never tried going anywhere near aringoth himself. I have preferred to sneak in, hit the safe, and sneak to the beehives and burn 3 of them before aringoth even knows what hit him. Again, my sneak skill is always maxed out at 100 with all the perks selected except for the sneak attack damage multiplier perks (backstab, assassins blade, and I think the third is called the deadly shot perk.) One question, if you do kill aringoth, does it have any effect on your completion of the loud and clear thieves guild quest? Or have you tried?

Nope ... one of the things that Brynjolf says is that Maven would prefer if Aringoth is left alive, but if he tries to stop you, KILL HIM -- something I have no problem doing since Aringoth's about the most pretentious elf in the game (short of Ondolemar, the Thalmor you meet in Markarth looking into Ogmund's Talos worship ... )

Well, yes, I know brynjolf says that, but that's what I'm asking; if you do kill aringoth, does brynjolf respond any differently when you return to him? I.E. Does he say, "Well, Maven did prefer that aringoth remained alive, but you did what needed to be done."

Nope ... all that matters to Brynjolf is that you get the deed and only burn 3 hives.
If you burn 4 or more hives, you fail the job. Don't forget the deed either.
(Side note - later in the TG questline you can get the deed back from the TG informant Gulum-Ei ... There was ORIGINALLY going to be an option to GIVE Maven the deed at that point -- Bethesda never got around to implementing it.

(IF SOMEONE WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A MOD ON THIS, I think that'd be WONDERFUL!)

Ok cool. I know you fail the job if you burn more than 3 hives. I did it once. I don't know if you have seen my story under the fan fiction section of this forum, but the name of it is Lissette Direblade the blademistress thief. I've posted 3 chapters so far. You are welcome to check it out and comment on it if you wish!
