Vaella nodded at the imperial mans' questions. "I could indeed, but I have only one bow,amd there are certainly more than one sentry. Even if I could down one or two, it only takes a poor angle or a bit of luck on their part, and our approach will be known."

"Besides,"Valion added "The daylight works against us." He nodded to one of the three khajiit. " I say do as the khajiit suggests; wait until dusk, and then spring our trap. Those among us who won't sound like a moving armory-" he stared pointedly at the heavily armored human, orc, and argonian among them, "can slip up and do some quick blade work on the sentries. My sister will silence any that we miss."

    Madrar

    The Shadow in the Dark.
Merric stared at the patrolling forsworn, hand on the hilt of his sword. The suggested path was not a particularly bad idea, but there was a good chance the sentries would find them if they stayed in one place for too long. But a mad rush towards a fortified position was an excellent way to end up dead. The swordsman sighed at the lack of options, and nodded to the elven siblings and the khajiit. "Then we seem to be stuck waiting for the cover of evening. Or perhaps some other distraction that will draw those sentries away from the mine." With that, he found a small, moss covered boulder, and took a seat. He was out of direct line of sight, but in a position where he could leap to his feet and draw his sword at a moments' notice.

    The Imperial Paladin
Kallus' jaw clenched in barely suppressed fury, but he bowed his head to the masses. He knew he was an experienced warrior and leader, but all that experience wouldn't count for anything if none of the others would follow him. The point was rendered moot when the hooded figure spoke out, bringing up the point that they were wasting time by standing around and arguing about who would lead them, rather than making their way towards the captured mines. For his part, Kallus remained silent as the group of adventurers and mercenaries trooped out of the stone walls of Markarth. Out of all of them, only two really concerned the paladin. The hooded figure, whose motives seemed good but were still hidden from Kallus and the others. The second was the dunmer in scale and leather and with an aristocratic bearing. This task could not be deemed so important that a dunmer noble would throw in his lot with them.

Or perhaps the Silver Bloods had struck some deal with an obscure dunmer house that the breton had not heard of. That was not impossible-he was woefully ignorant of the dunmeri houses, and their motives. Whatever the case, Kallus was certain the truth would come out in good time. The knigh-paladin fell in with the others, aware of the gazes of the guardsmen on his back. He wondered for an instant if this whole quest was a mere ruse to remove some powerful individuals from the region. He dismissed the theory almost immediately. The Silver Bloods weren't so petty as to have Kallus and the others killed so long as they stayed out of their business.

They stopped after several hours of marching, a short distance from the captured mine. Far enough that the sentries could not easily make them out, but close enough to see the forsworn patrolling around the entrance. Their approach was concealed by a large growth of the scraggly trees with a few large, mossy boulders dotted around as well. The others settled down and discussed the best way to approach the mine without being discovered. After a short discussion, they decided on sneaking forth once darkness fell. While that was not his preferred approach, Kallus settled down, sitting with his back against one of the boulders. He nodded towards the orcish man in the armour of the imperial legion. "You served, did you? What legion?"

Sothas and Aylira followed the mixed group out of the city of stone and towards the conquered mines. Neither Sothas nor his companion knew what the forsworn were planning. They were too close to the city to be allowed to remain in place for long. Despite the argument that had started outside the inn, they made good time and without anyone being too hostile to each other. When they stopped, it was within bowshot of the mine. Aylira clambered up one of the nearby trees and looked out at the scantily clad guards outside. She listened absentmindedly as the khajiit and the bosmer discussed strategy. For Sothas' part, he hunkered down among the others, out of sight. He looked slightly ridiculous, hunkered down out of sight, but there was not many places an argonian his size could hide comfortably.

His dark elf companion scowled and hopped down out of the tree, landing lightly and rejoining the others. "They're not doing anything up there. Just standing guard." The assassin glanced over at the only other dark elf in the group. His skin was slightly paler than hers and his hair indicated he was a great deal older than her. His eyes, however, held a vibrant light as if some inner strength was shining out. "What about you?" she asked him, "what brings you on this merry little adventure?"

    Drahkma

    Dashing Imperial Officer.
Vorhael glanced up, surprised to be addressed at all even if it was by the only other dunmer in the group. He had seen her leave the inn with the large argonian. Both looked like they knew how to handle themselves. Then, the same could be said for everyone in their little group. Whether there was any truth to appearances would have to wait until they saw any actual combat. While it would be good to know who he could count on to hold their own in a fight, it would also benefit him to pick out the most dangerous of them. If things went his way, he'd be able to gather the more dangerous of the group to his side. Counting on others siding with him, however, was dangerous at best. He flashed the dunmer woman a thin-lipped smile and said "oh, you know. Lust for adventure and gold, perhaps a little...bloodletting on the way." He subtly nodded towards the accursed paladin, obliviously speaking with the orcish legionnaire. "What do you make of him? In my experience, his type are far too zealous for the welfare of everyone else."

    Rell

    Champion of Malacath!
Balgur settled down with the others to wait, resting his shield against the side of a large boulder, and sitting as comfortable as he could in heavy armor. The breton paladin stepped forwards and sat near him asking if he'd indeed served in the imperial army and what legion specificially. "Aye" he grunted, running his thumb along the blade of his spear "I served. Seventh legion, if you're really that curious." He shrugged his armored shoulders "but that was a while ago- I've been working as a mercenary for some time now. Less people barking orders at me is one of the advantages." He glanced up at the sky, then sighed. He wasn't overly fond of sitting around and waiting. There had been plenty of that in the legion, he remembered. But that was one of the many things he couldn't control and so he settled back against the rocks. "What about you? Any service with the army or have you always been a...paladin of sorts?"

The sky darkened from a clear, pale blue, occasionally marked with wispy clouds, to a roselike pink. Emeric readied his spells, glancing up over the top of the boulder to the pair of Forsworn guards. Their relief had not yet arrived and weariness was taking its toll on the pair. One leaned against the rocks while his companion sat nearby. They might have been speaking, but the light was so poor that the warlock could not make out what they were saying. He turned to the others, returning to an undignified crouch as he approached the others gathered in their hiding spot. "The time for action approaches. You two-" he pointed to the elven pair "-eliminate the sentries, and quietly, if you are able. The rest of us will move when you signal us." With that, he turned away, silently dismissing the pair of elves.

He had no idea what they would face inside the mine. Forsworn-yes, but he had never faced the barbarians in combat before and he tended to avoid mines and other unpleasant holes in the ground as often as possible. They seldom yielded anything of value and were even less likely to be unoccupied. And, if the tales he had heard were any indication, those occupants were generally unpleasant creatures. Perhaps fighting mere men, no matter how ferocious their reputation, wouldn't be so terrible. As it was, he certainly didn't plan to be the first one inside the caves.

Vaella and Valion nodded in unison at the sorcerers' words, and in an instant both were up and gone, leaving their companions behind. The twins quickly blended into the shadows, Vaella using her innate talents built over a lifetime of living in the woods and navigating them without leaving a trace. Valions' methods were somewhat more suspect and for his part, he very much doubted the paladin traveling with them, or any of the others, for that matter, would agree with. "Nocturnal, conceal me in your shadows." He whispered, melding with the long shadows cast by the setting sun as if he were some wraith. The pair made good progress, moving swiftly and silently across the terrain to their targets. The two Forsworn were none the wiser that their lives were about to come to sudden, violent ends.

Valion acted first, leaping over a short, natural wall near the first of the sentries, blades in hand. The man barely had time to grunt in surprise as the elven rogues swords crossed over his throat. The second man was just turning, perhaps to ask his companion a question, or perhaps alerted by some sound when his comrade hit the ground. He only managed a strangled gasp as Vaellas' arrow punched through his ribcage and into his right lung. Gasping pink froth, the man sank to the ground as the female bosmer approached the fallen and her brother. "Fine shooting, dear sister." The rogue complimented, before whistling sharply into the night, signalling the others to move up. Vaella had her ear pressed up against the ramshackle door that covered the mine entrance. "I hear nothing. Our activities remain undiscovered."

Draj Kir stood, ears perked attentively. The whistle had doubtless been heard by the others, but in him it signaled something more...primal. The start of a hunt that had only one possible outcome. Drawing his axe, he started for the mine entrance at steady jog, all senses on high alert.

His khajiit eyes let him see the elven twins clearly, standing over the fallen forsworn sentries. "Well done" he said, a purr to his voice. "But now it is time for the hunters to take over." With that, he pushed open the door to the mine, and stepped inside, axe at the ready.

The smell hit him first; it wasn't overwhelming, but it was definitely there. The scent of death, wafting from further inside the mine. He walked further inside, beckoning the others forwards. The sounds of voices could be heard, but not conversation. "Something is wrong here," he hissed over his shoulder. "Sounds like...chanting from deeper inside."

The other dunmers' explanation was common enough, but something seemed...off about him. Before she could pry further he nodded towards the pompous paladin who was talking with the orcish soldier. She shrugged "seems like most of his kind. Pompous, a little arrogant, and sure they know what's best for everyone else, whether everybody else likes it or not."

Sothas tapped his companion on the shoulder at the sound of a sharp whistle, shortly after the pair of wood elves had departed. "I think that's the signal." He got up, nodded to the others, and started making his way towards the mine the forsworn had conquered.

He and Aylira arrived just in time to see the male khajiit turn and hiss over his shoulder that something was wrong. Unlimbering his tower shield and readying his blade, the argonian warrior stepped forwards. "Lead on. Any forsworn we find will meet a quick end. Anything else we find, as well." He cast a cautionary look at Aylira and she nodded in understanding, hefting her own sword.

Kaliir entered on the heels of the big argonian and his smaller friend. She grimaced at the smell of death, and the fur on the back of her neck started to stand up ever so slightly. She drew Moonfang and slung the sheathe over her back, tightening the strap. "Let's just get this over with." She growled, "so I can enjoy the pile of gold the silverbloods are going to pay me to get this stench out of my fur." Voices drifted to her ears, but she couldn't make any sense out of them.

Emeric brought up the rear of the party, careful to keep an eye out for hidden forsworn or archers. He didn't fear the magics of the savages- he was certain his own wards and counter spells could handle anything they sent his way. However, robes were not designed for close combat, and he suspected they'd be just as useless against arrows. The warlock glanced down at one of the two corpses that the elven duo had slain. Then he frowned. Emeric wasn't familiar with the Reachmen, but he had heard stories of tattooed warriors with primitive weapons. It was hard to tell in the failing light, but it looked like the corpses were branded, not tattoos. Frowning, he crouched and summoned a small globe of candlelight. Yes, there was no question now; an angry red brand marred the flesh of the dead mans' forehead. A circle, or perhaps it was meant to depict a moon. He wondered about the significance of the markings, but before he could reach a conclusion, there was a shout from up ahead. Apparently, their infiltration had not gone as smoothly as they'd hoped. "Perfect" the warlock muttered sarcastically.

Sothas and Aylira were close behind the khajiit and elven duos' but the further the forged into the mine, the more uneasy the friends felt. They'd fought and traveled at each others' sides long enough to pick up on the slightest hint of unease from the other. "It's too quiet" the dark elf whispered, as much for Sothas' benefit as the others. She could hear the words that seemed to bounce off the walls and corners of the mine, but couldn't make sense of them. Still, they put the fine hairs at the back of her neck on end. The hulking argonian beside her nodded once, eyes taking in the dimly lit, carved rock around them. They were passing a side corridor when someone shouted. It was a distinctly unfriendly shout. Despite his size, Sothas reacted with surprising speed, drawing his sword and slamming his massive shield onto the ground in front of him. Running from the side corridor, he saw several forsworn, brandishing weapons. There was a whisper of sound from behind him, and one of Ayliras' daggers flipped past on the right, burying itself in one of the charging reachmens' chest.

The first man reached Sothas', hacking at the tower shield the argonian kept between them. In return, Sothas brought his heavy blade down on the space between the mans' shoulder and neck, hacking deep into his chest. But even as that one fell, foot falls from ahead signalled that the fight had not gone unnoticed. Aylira swore as a larger force of forsworn came rushing down the main corridor. "Keep them back! If they surround us, it's over!" She drew her sword and cut down a scantily clad woman who'd managed to slip past Sothas as he dealt with her comrades.
