I think, your choice doesn't matter anything, because we don't know exactly, what is CANON.
Maybe, on TES6 Bethesda will say something like "yes, /number/ years ago in Skyrim was civil war. But for Impire it doesn't matter anything".
So it's only your choice.
I like Empire and Stormcloaks :)

Bethesda did such a good PR job for both sides that you kinda feel bad for whichever faction loses and the change you bring about . There is no black and white / good or evil side . I do feel guilty for, having stabbed Balgruf in the back and doomed him to the blue palace cellar .

This is your only other fighters guild other than the werewolf club .
If you are looking for appropriate rewards . Light armour fighters should join stormcloaks and heavy armour fighters should join the empire .

If there is one gripe I can find is being a heavy armour Orc getting light armour from the stormcloaks.

I'd always pick Imperial over Stormcloak.... The Stormcloaks feel a bit too neanderthal to me. I like the medieval feel of the Imperials... Plus they're not a bunch of racists
Racists you say? They seem to be the most welcoming and accepting racists I've ever saw, though I must be confused, is racism allowing those you hate to live in your city, eat your food, sell your wares, own businesses etc?.. I guess if you're a proud, straight, white male then any sort of self preservation movement is deemed racist, even if you do live in the most diverse city in Skyrim.

Oh wait, was allowing Dunmer to build and keep a huge shrine to Azura the racist part? Or was it Ulfric allowing a High Elf to own the most prestigious property in Windhelm? Could it be the part where Nords work UNDER Elves in Windhelm that's racist? No, no.. It must be the part where Ulfric allows Nord war veterans to live on the streets whilst Dunmer refugees live in houses, that damned racist.

Be honest, your generlisation is based on the premise that foreigners should be treated better than natives in their own land, depending on who those natives are.

Both are quite terrible choices. After much consideration, I actually have to go with the Stormcloaks as the best option. Defenders of the empire point out that the elves are the real enemy- that's true, but the empire has actually undermined human resistance to them in Hammerfell and the upper echelons of the empire that we see are full of Thalmor toadies.

Ulfric himself is incompetent and unpleasant, but the empire is decisively proven to not be an effective defender of humankind. If Skyrim breaks free, perhaps more effective leaders can take the helm of the empire and make it worthwhile again.

I've a love-hate relationship with the Stormcloaks, but I hate the Imperials only slightly less than the Thalmor. If anything, I'd keep Ulfric where he is but advise him on what he needs to do to defeat General Tullius and keep the Thalmor out of Skyrim.

Well said, friend. I've heard this same BS that the Stormcloaks are somehow racist, yet Skyrim is teeming with non-Nords everywhere. Every race has their land where they dominate the populace, but do the Nords get Skyrim? Oh of course not.

And you all please tell me how welcoming the Snow Elves were to the peaceful Atmorans?

Skyrim is for Nords. Just like every other race has their own land.

I honestly think Ulfric and his Stormcloaks are completely ignorant to the larger picture. While siding with the Almeri Dominion is not the greatest deal in the land it does allow the Imperials to keep peace until they can figure out a way to beat the elves.

Ulfric wants civil war to meet his own personal goals. Not to mention if you aren’t a Nord he couldn’t care less for you. Nords seem pretty blinded by loyalty to a megalomaniac who only cares for himself and his ascension to power.

So, I’ve played through the Civil War on both sides. Personally, I enjoyed fighting for the Stormcloaks for four reasons:

1. The dialog options made me feel more like an equal with the Stormcloaks. Repeating, “Yes, sir!” over and over as an Imperial got old fast.

2. The final battle was more interesting, with me and Ulfric seeing who could shout more foes off their feet.

3. The reward of a unique set of Stormcloak Bear (Officer) armor was more satisfying.

4. The modest collection of helmets from dead Imperials looked great decorating Ulfric’s throne!

The Imperials has a more organized military setup that has order instead of the chaos of a bunch of Nords trying to get “honor and glory” for theirselves and with that mindset they practically get themselves killed. The only reason they actually are giving the imperials a legitimate fight is because for one the are are mostly former imperial soldiers that has taken up arms. Second of all the Imperials in Skyrim are just a bunch of local recruits of the 4th legion. But in the end I say canon will say the empire won because if you fight for the fort in Falkwreath there will be a note mentioning a considerable force will be coming up the pale pass.

Honestly, after thinking about it, my main issue with the Stormcloaks is that they are too focused on the religious aspect of the rebellion (the main cause is not the empire, but the WGC and the Thalmor). If the Civil War was more based on the stormcloaks rebelling against a tyrannical empire or an empire forced to imperialize (Forced removal of Nord culture and forced adoption of Imperial culture and names and such) Skyrim, I personally would be more in favor of the rebellion. As it stands, however, neither side is really better than the other.

Neither. I empathize with the Nords, but recognize that Skyrim needs to remain of friendly terms with the Empire until the Thalmor are no longer a threat. Therefore I coerce both sides to sit down at the table and make peace.
Be peaceful, or I will kill you.

I'm confused.
Because another race happens to live in the same place as the supposed "racist", the "racist" is not racist?
Doesn't behaviour determine bigotry, not proximity?

everyone knows it is not racist unless you are actively trying to get rid of another race/ethnicity. It is obviously the act of removing a race that makes a person racist, not simply having a negative opinion.

What? You don't have to "remove" a race to be racist. By definition racist means on who practices racism (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism) and that does not necessarily involve forced removal of another race. That would be genocide (if killed).

That is why I put the /sarcasm at the end. Stormcloak supporters simply believe that if you do not actively commit criminal acts/force removal, then the mere act of allowing the Dunmer to stay negates any and all accusations, perceived or not.

I honestly find the Stormcloaks to be "racist" in that they are focused on a clearly nord cause. Most people other than the nords seem to have issues other than Thalmor/WGC. Dunmer have their own religion and do not worship Talos in the first place, so a Stormcloak victory mostly benefits the Nords in the first place, making it a Nord issue, which makes some supporters (like Rolff) complain when the Dunmer do not care about the Civil War.
