Yeah, they can and they will attack, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Worst-case scenario, you lose the ability to start a few radiant quests if they kill the market vendors in Solitude.
One of the quests won't even be offered if you've already gotten far enough in the Dark Brotherhood questline to kill Vittoria Vici anyway, and the same vendor mentions the whole thing about burning of King Olaf, and that quest is actually given by the Bard's College after you join.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just go in and have fun. If NPCs die, then NPCs die. I went and killed a ton of them myself as a werewolf in Whiterun...:D
Did that in Falkreath, Maybe that's why I can't be thane.

I've not downloaded the latest DLC, and am becoming more and more glad I haven't. As far as who the Vampire's attack, so far for my own experience, they will get anyone they can (but any child). The Blacksmith I dealt with in Riverwood was killed, and the wife of the one in Whiterun was killed, server all outside merchant's in Whiterun and Solitude were killed. So it seems the attacks are random. I don't have my char help, as a bounty often occurs if I miss and hit a guard or citizen. So I send out a Flaming Atronarch, or a Dremora to hammer them.
Dragonborn DLC is not like Dawnguard in respect to the threat to citizens in Skyrim or Solstheim.
Random NPC might still be killed (by dragons mainly if they have been awakened) but it won`t be because you want to take your time going through the main Dragonborn quest line.
i.e. Miraak`s minions do not randomly attack citizens

Ash Spawn attacks around Raven Rock do occur but may be greatly reduced by doing a small side quest for the authorities there

So there's no way to not trigger these attacks with EVERY one of your characters, given you can't exactly choose to avoid guards.

That's what I thought, given the quest line's only prerequisite is you need to be lv 10.
So, if you can't do certain quests that need to be done to progress. Then how can you finish the game? The reason I bought these DLCs is too experience everything the game has to offer. Otherwise what good is it? They should have made it so merchants can be knocked out but can't be killed. They can be knocked out and robbed and so on, but never really die. I wish i knew this stuff before i wasted my money on the Dawnguard DLC. It's my own fault though. I should have asked more questions before hand. I had no idea they would come out with a DLC that hinders the game. Of course there are no refunds. How annoying!

It does not matter. I can move the DLC to my external hard drive, and delete it from my console. Then reinstall whe I am ready to start the quest. The first playthrough, I'm not going to worry about it though. However, for my second character I will.

I don't think they can kill anyone essential to major quests. Those NPCs are programmed as "essential" and cannot be killed.

But some of the non-essential favor/quest givers, trainers and potential followers/marriage candidates who help fill out the game--and give the immersion aspect of the game (one of Skyrim's selling points!) more variety and options--can be killed. And this is why I hesitate about getting Dawnguard, because I don't want that for every character.

For example: Lami and Benor, both in Marthol, were killed in one dragon attack in my Redguard's game. Lami gives you a minor quest to find a book, and getting her book counts towards thaneship in marthol (and there's not many favors/quests you can do in that hold to begin with!). She is also one of the alchemy trainers available to you without joining the Dark Brotherhood or getting one fo the DLCs. Benor is a potential follower and marriage candidate, who can also be recruited into the Blades (in you choose to do the optional Rebuilding the Blades quest).

Now, imagine if you were playing a game where you had dragons AND vampires killing off potential gust/favor givers, trainers, marriage candidates and followers, even with characters you didn't want o do the Dawnguard quests with?

As I understand that you can, on Xbox, delete add-ons for games from your console's harddrive (and download them again later with the some Xbox profile you purchased them with--i don't now if this works with a bundle like yours). However, what if, like I am now, playing two different character concurrently, and only want to to do Dawnguard with one of those characters? Why do I have to put up with vampire attacks in the other character's game.

To top it off, there's all this cool stuff in Dawnguard that I'd like access to but sans the bleeping vampire attacks.

Yeah, the game designers didn't think this through.

Moving the DLC onto a usb drive and sticking it in when you want to play works, but might give a performance speed errors if it's non-compliant

I don't know why we just can't turn each DLC off and on. Did Bethesda ever comment on the apparent problems with the Dawnguard DLC? When you have vampires and dragons running around. People get killed. As long as the deaths are random, and they don't always go after the same npcs time and time again. Although this potentially could happen. I suppose it all adds a bit of mystery to the game. You'd never know what could happen.

When I get to that point I am going to write a journal about what happens with dragon and vampire attacks. I will let you know in my game which npcs and so on are killed in my game. Then we can see if the same characters are always killed.

ATM I am at the College of Winterhold. I am level 9, and vampires have begun attacking Winterhold. They killed a master vampire, and two death hounds already. I imagine it must have been the town guards. I did not witness the fight, while it was going on I was chopping wood. The market vendor there was not killed this time.

The thing is I am not sure if I should go to Whiterun and kill the dragon. So, I can use unrelenting force shout. I also, unlocked a new shout in Saarthal. Or should I continue at the College of Winterhold?

I find the random deaths add to the realism. Though I am saddened I will never again buy/sell inside Warmaiden's. Vampires got my dude, and before I ever did get to have that drink with him.
