I'm sure most of you by now have already heard about the Elementary School shooting in Connecticut. They say the death toll is 26 (5-10 year olds) and that the shooter used an M4 and a Glock (Both registered under his mother's name) and that he is now dead.

Why someone would do something like this, and right before Christmas, I don't know. I just hope they don't trace the cause of his actions to video games, because we don't really need any more flak.

I believe the death count was 18, but that does not really matter. I'm shocked every time something like this happens. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

How heart wrenching...

No, I bet the excuse will be how the end of the world is supposedly less than a week away.

That was an idea of mine for a while. I suppose, if the bastard was still breathing, he could have spun it as giving the kids some mercy so they don't have to live through December 21st. Still wouldn't be valid.

Yeah. I think if that is the reason, it's some kind of religious reason, maybe? When I was at the store a few days ago there were 2 women talking bad about a pregnant woman who I bet could also hear them. They were saying she was irresponsible for getting pregnant so close to the end days. That it was the equivalent of an abortion.

Some other stuff they said was even worse. Then woman suddenly just left her cart in the isle and didn't come back for it. :/

Nothing angers me more than people who say "oh, he was playing violent video games, that's the reason he became a killer!" Ugh, CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION!! Sorry folks, I've spent the past semester hearing that in both my Statistics and Psychology classes. I really think that members of the media need a refresher course in Stats to remind themselves about things like lurking variables (i.e. psychological issues?). Grrr!

*takes deep breath* That having been said, this was horrible. I have a friend of mine on FB who is thinking that maybe we should start training and arming schoolteachers and admins. Given the present circumstances, it might be a valid idea, but I'm not entirely sure it's a good one. I have a 3-year-old and I don't know how I would feel knowing that the teacher is armed, honestly. Maybe if all teachers and admins undergo annual psychological evaluations? With the current budget belt-tightening in public schools, would this even be a viable solution? Thoughts?

I think having armed teachers, just in case, is a terrific idea. Maybe this whole thing could have been avoided. The only cause for concern is the fact that a lot of times the kids push their teachers over the edge. How would the teacher react, having a gun in their desk.

Getting pregnant this close the end of the world the same as abortion? Nonsense. If she was Christian, it would make no difference (assuming Christianity is in fact, true. Not forcing my beliefs onto anyone here). If anything, the baby wouldn't have to deal with the crap so prevalent in this world. He/she would go straight to the next.

Avoided, probably not...but the casualties could have been less. But I do agree, what if a student were to really get all up in a teacher's face? I saw it happen in HS, and I went to a relatively well-behaved one. I wouldn't doubt that some of those kids would at the very least have found themselves pistol-whipped if the teachers were packing.

Not only that, but I know that inner-city schools have metal detectors to deter the students from bringing weapons in...how would the teachers get around that? And what would stop some rogue kid from wrestling a teacher for a gun and start opening fire?

This man is a piece of plops. All schools should hire security guards. If this school had at least 2 guards, then maybe this man would have been killed b4 he could have killed 5 YEAR OLD KIDS! His mother was a kindergarten teacher, and he killed mainly the kids in her class. My brother is 5, and if somebody did this to him and decided not to kill themselves, they would be dead within the week.

There really are no words for this.

I just...my god. The devil that possesses some people (and I use the term devil not literally) is beyond comprehension.

I read that he also killed his mother. Because I really like everyone on here, and I'm grossly outnumbered, I shall keep my opinion of US gun laws to myself but something has got to be done.

Armed teachers may be a good idea on paper, but it would NEVER work out, ever. Too many variables, and too much liability. The only solution to this problem would be to school hiring security guards, something that also wouldn't work out. Budget is strained enough everywhere in the school system and paying more people to prevent something that is almost certainly never going to happen at all is just a waste.(thousands and thousands of schools and a school shooting happens every couple of years)

It's terrible that this happened but the fact of the matter is its the way our world works. If someone truly wants to be able to go in a school and shoot a bunch of kids, its possible. This starts at the gun laws, screening people a lot closely. It also starts with the people in this guy's life. You don't do something like this and not exhibit any signs at all beforehand, I'm sure this guy had history of mental illness.

Now its that time for all the misplaced blame that happens every time something like this goes down.

I thought he used his mama's guns though....she had legal rights to them, he just took them. Gun control laws isn't going to do crap in that situation unless you're going to totally outlaw them - which in today's ultra-connected global world would not be a viable option - in fact, they might just make what we got going on worse.

Plus, I LOOOOOVE fresh venison....I'd like to still be able to throw the brothers-in-law out to the blind to go get me some.

Excuse my ignorance as I don't know how it works south of the border, but are gun control laws different state to state?

The gun laws in this country are a joke. Okay, you want to hunt. Fine, get your permit and get a rifle. The type of gun that is designed for hunting. You want to protect yourself and your family, fine, get a permit and a handgun.

But, automatic weapons? Really? Those type of firearms do not need to be owned by the general public. Sorry. I almost laugh when people say 'Now is not the time to be talking about how we fluffed up again as a country'. No. Now is the PERFECT time. It is just too damn easy to get guns in this country. And I'm talking about the type of guns that, as I've already said, regular citizens have no business owning.

And no, this is not how our world works. This is something that we should NEVER EVER allow to become the norm. And never going to happen? It has happened. School shootings happening every few years is too much. It shouldn't be happening at all.

Sadly, yes and no...there are federal laws, mostly involving obtaining weapons, and then states have their own laws, most of them carrying laws. For example, it is now legal to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus in Michigan, while several states still outlaw it.

Unbelievable, just fluffing unbelievable. Hopefully he's burning in hell as we speak, getting the punishment he deserves. Those kids were at the very beggining of their lives, and had so much ahead of them. Then some disgrace of the human gene pool comes and deprives them of their future. These kids are supposed to be laughing, playing, and being happy; NOT lying in graves!

Sadly, people think the 2nd Amendment is exactly what gives them the right to own automatic weapons...and they buy them. I had a buddy of mine post a meme on FB about it, and a rather heated discussion ensued between me and someone in the Army...his response was "I need it for work," to which I replied "keep it on the damn post! Your job doesn't involve being out in public in the middle of town with an automatic weapon!" *sigh* There are times I wanna move back to Canada...this is one of them. :p

Exactly. Times have changed. When the 2nd Amendment was put into place, we had fluffing muskets. Not anymore. It's time for a revision. I have nothing against people wanting to protect themselves with a handgun, or to go hunting with a rifle. That's fine. There is no damn reason to have an automatic weapon when you are among and part of the general public.
