When will graphics truly be lifelike?

When I play Skyrim there are things that really blow me away, and then there are things that very much show this is just a video game. One example is the trees near Rfiten and the foliage. It almost looks real to me. The ENB mod makes it appear real. Then, the snow covered tree's look really fake to me. I have no knowledge on graphics and how they progress throughout time other than you can tell they obviously get better, but is it impossible to take HD pictures and implement these as textures? I have been pretty impressed with the ENB mod for Skyrim from what I have seen, but when will a game feel movie like?

BTW, from what I understand Bethesda makes their own gaming engines and their collision engine is awesome. The first time I killed a Frostbite spider and watched it roll down a hill with limp legs flailing was pretty unreal.

i never want graphics to look perfect. i want games to stay true to that essence, and remain games. i feel that if we make games look like real life it will lose that atmosphere. if all games looked the same, but amazing, then it would be boring. having unrealistic graphics allows you to be more creative, use light in a different way, play it to your wants. as soon as you make games completely realistic they start to become more like simulators. and that is something i can't have

I agree with stagnant. I like video games and animated movies to have their own visual style. Too much realism takes away the escapism.

I wouldn't want a game with real graphics. But i'd rather a game where that graphics are good enough so i dont notice any little glitches in graphics or how the textures connect from the wall to the floor etc.

The capability to create an application with extremely realistic graphics is already in existence. It is possible to make games with this kind of detail and realistic animation and texturing:
The problem is that there's no market for them because it would take a very powerful and expensive machine to run the application smoothly and there simply aren't even remotely enough video game enthusiasists out there with that kind of machine to make it worthwhile for any game developer/publisher.

Just in time for the fiyahworks show! BOOM!
Well, I live in the real world already. I don't want my graphics *too* realistic.

This. I like it when developers go for a certain animation style versus trying to make it look as realistic as possible.

I would die to see Skyrim in that application. Unreal and truly spectacular.

Thank you Dagmar. I guess Bunny protectors are pretty nice.;)

I concur. Mario games for instance look good in their style. I wouldn't like them realistic. Skyrim on the other hand would be insane to me if it looked anything like above. Just my take however.

Bethesda is amazing at fitting a lot details into a small size . i mean skyrim with more than 200 quests and a big land and good graphics is only 6 GB !
i know many other games much shorter and easier and same graphics but they are 16 GB !
skyrim is made perfectly and no other company can beat Bethesda :D

Heavy Rain almost pushed this a bit too far. It was on the boat to 'Uncanny Valley'. I do think that visuals that are obviously false give the imagination more to toy with, and makes the immersion more - uhm - real.

Case in point is the game deus ex:human revolution. Now I know there are other games, but this is a shining example of how graphics that is definitely not life-like adds to the experience. That golden hue in the game world, that augments the feeling of artificially illuminated night time, and maybe something else more esoteric.

In any way, that there is something that takes you places. You might have experienced something like that in the real world, that builds the appeal. But only for a split second, an illusion of your eyes maybe. Sure, graphics can and will evolve, but I hope they never lose that artistic tapestry of style.

I think if graphics get any better, they'll be holodecks, and then I may very well never leave the house again.

Getting past graphics a bit, I think the next stage in gaming will be a modular gaming bench powered by a conventional pc unit - maybe thinning the line between pc and console. To give a visual, think of the animus from AC or the rig from Surrogate. A sleek bench like at the dentist, peripherals including gloves, mimicking joysticks used for Wii for control, replacing the keyboard and mouse and making use of VR optics goggles to replace screens and reduce overall cost. But that's just wishful thinking on my part at the moment :D
