I just loaded the game.
IS there any preferrence as to what charater I choose, meaning do all the characters eventually do the same thing? I don't care to be a Mage, yet I can learn all the skills. Don't really care to be a lizard, but it really doesn't matter.

Is there any one caharacter you like the best?

Different races have different abilities innately. One good example (off of the top of my head) is Kajiit (cat people). They do more damage with unarmed attacks due to having claws. They also have the night-eye ability to see better in the dark. Orcs have a berserker power where they do double damage and take half damage. Those are just a couple. But as for spells and starting stats, not much changes between them except little things, like High Elves start with more magika.

Here's a site to help you out, UESPWiki

It has practically everything you can ever want to know about the game on it, from character stats and abilities to how to use the perk system and walkthroughs for caves and such. I'd recommend only using it if you can't figure out what to do (quest/cave/dungeon-wise).

As for your question, I tend to use Kajiit more. I like the way they look and I love Night-eye.

I started with a shield and 1 handed fighter. Fighters can do the champions faction. I just suggest you stick to one side of the civil war, one guild and play & learn. This will give you so many chances to replay the game with different character types. Sometimes you will be forced to start another guilds quests, but don't complete them. Just concentrate on the guild you choose.

Guilds have their own quests and then there are misc quests and the common main quest line all characters follow.

I think its a bit early for you to be seeking advice before you've even created a character. Make your own decisions and learn from your own mistakes. If you find yourself really struggling in a certain area, then come and seek help. I usually find it off-putting when people start smothering me with recommendations when I first start a game (especially a game as big as Skyrim). Admittedly, I was doing crap with my first character, so I created a new one and focused more on certain skills, and once I was getting the hang of the game, I went back to my first character and started applying what I had learned, and making good progress.

As for race's unique abilities, I rarey use mine. Some of them can only be activated once a day, and there are plenty of other powers that become available to you throughout the game.

sticky is right, discovering this game for yourself is most of the enjoyment, but as for what you're asking, it doesn't matter what character you choose. The ONLY thing that you would miss out on is the race powers (Nord's Battle Cry, Argonian breathing underwater, Wood Elf controling the animals) So don't worry who you pick, do what you will enjoy most!

I would also suggest roleplaying with your character for a bit. Take some time to think of a background for you character, choose which race and skills you think would be best for your roleplaying experience, and then enter the world of Skyrim and have fun!

I personally like the Argonians just because they're cool. Plus, there's so few of them in the game compared to other races that it kind of adds something to the whole experience. "Us versus the world," I guess.

Anyway, it really depends on your play style.

Warrior - Nord, Orc, Redguard, Imperial (I guess).

Thief - Khajiit, Argonian, Dark elf.

Mage - Breton, High Elf.

Archer - Wood Elf.
