Well first welcome to the forums I hope you enjoy yourself. Second you posted this in the right place.
Now my answer to your question is my favorite place is whiterun. I like it because it is the first major hold you visit and it reminds me of of the Lord of the Rings city of Rohan.

Each has it's own style and charm, but for me it is also Whiterun. As far as factions, the Companions fit my main character best and therefore I spent much time based out of Whiterun. It's one of the more diverse, melting-pot type of cities too.

Riverwood is cool for a small town, also because it's the first settlement I ventured into after Helgen.

Falkreath is an interesting one too. It's just a little spot in the middle of forested wilderness and has a somber, but peaceful stillness to it likely due to being built around the ancient cemetery. It's also the town that is closest to my favorite abode, which is a Dwemer-styled mod house located not too far southwest of the original DB sanctuary

I'm the same. Whiterun and Riverwood both hold very special places in my heart. I also really like Markarth once I stopped getting lost in the city. It's really pretty in my opinion and I love the view from exiting my house in the city :)

Man I forgotten how often I would get lost in Markarth. After playing skyrim for so long now I think "wow I got lost here god im an idiot".

haha! Right! I still get lost in Windhelm though. After all the playing I've done those twists and turns in the city gets me turned upside down. It doesn't matter how many times I've been there. I hate that city

Riverwood and Falkreath would be my favorites I think. Up until a little while I ago I had pretty much forgotten Falkreath was even there, that's probably what I like about it, it's all hidden away in the middle of a forest... Now I spend a lot of my time there. Especially since my main home at the moment is Lakeview manor.
I also quite like Markarth to. And of course, Whiterun. I better stop there or i'm going to end up choosing all of them. xD

No city will ever surpass the greatness of Hack Dirt

I bet it was a mess when trying to start the db questline.

It was! And trying to leave the city after talking to the boy? Forget about it!

Markarth cause Vlindrel Hall is the best house you can buy (for me atleast) with all the cupboards and drawers near the bedroom, great storage space, and you can buy an entrance hall, which makes it look way better than any other place. Hjerim was terrible, even after I bought the upgrades.

Riften is also one of my favs, cause I'm usually going there alot to pickpocket people or do thieves guild quests.

I love all the cities, so it's hard to choose. Bethesda did a great job when it comes to making each city distinct and memorable. But out of all of them, Whiterun is my favorite. It looks beautiful and feels alive

When in doubt, follow the fox.
Markarth. Once you figure out where everything is, you can fly down the steps! Funnest city to run around in ever. Plus, once you're Thane, you can sleep in the Jarl's bed--he has the coolest bedroom in all of Tamriel, with his own waterfall and everything.

Whiterun or Falkreath. Those two brothers in Falkreath don't bother me because I always play as a Nord. :D

My opinions on hold and cities tend to vary depending on the character I'm playing; for example right now Windhelm is my favourite city, while Whiterun is at the bottom. Falkreath (or Solitude, or Morthal) I haven't even been to.

Edit: Forgot reasons.
I don't really know what it is about Falkreath, tbh. I just really like that place.
As for Whiterun, I enjoy running/jumping/Whirlwind Sprinting down the various stairs, climbing on the roofs and listening to Heimskr. The local kids and several adults (Nazeem, Ysolda and Sigurd come to mind) are particularly annoying, but I've got that sorted thanks to a mod (silence is golden indeed).

It's not what you think; it simply stops NPCs from telling you their life story (or asking if you get to the Cloud District very often) every time you run past them. :)
I need to literally bump into NPCs for them to say anything.

I bet there are other mods more like what you said, though. There are Skyrim mods for more or less everything, after all. :D

I saw a youtube vid of sum1 sending nazeem to cloud district by putting his corpse on a bridge ramp then pulling the lever, so frickin funny the dude went flying. Must see.

Whiterun :D

I just think it's so pretty how it's always sunny and how open it is. I also love the architecture.

Dawnstar and Falkreath for me personally. Riften felt like a ripoff of Bravil. While making it familiar I was kinda underwhelmed.

Dawnstar was that place with some quests but was a "secondary location" compared to the other cities but I loved its layout and the fact it had a dock.
