I've watched my roommate, playing a caster-type character, with Onmund. Onmund was ROCKING some faces with his spells. I don't know for certain, but I would assume they vary, as well as varying by the gear you give them. Give them good gear, they equip it, they're better! I know I gave my melee companion a full legendary/double enchanted dragonplate set of armor, as well as a daedric weapon, and they were invincible, and were damn near one-shotting everything they attacked. :)

bLaze up. play skYrim
yeah they probably vary a little bit but i doubt it would be much. I think its more about what type of fighter they are and the equipment you give them.

I gave Lydia some Dragonplate armor I didn't want, as well as some Dwarven weapons. She was kicking some ass. I really want that Kahjiit from the Mage's College as my Companion, but I think I have to help him with those stupid scrolls first...

All these are good points but it all boils down to what level you get your companion at. For examples if I get a companion at level 4 it will stay level 4 for the whole time I play, whether I dismiss him or not. There is a way to fix this if your on PC I think, it's somewhere here on the forums, sadly I'm not exactly sure where...... I'll tell you if I find it.

Indeed you do. And he also exemplifies the title of "glass cannon". He was dead within minutes of me venturing in a dwemer dungeon. I did my best to keep him up (he went down but not out at least three times) and by then I had had enough. Poor cat had to go the way of the buffalo. :'C

Damnit. Looks like I'll be sticking to Lydia, Cicero, and the Companions as well...Companions.

I like Cosnach, but as far as the one that lays a beating on any and all I have Vorstag in all ebony gear i enchanted. As a conjurer/destruction style mage Vorstag and a Dremora Lord are bad ass while I surround the melee with wall of flames.

You should be able to collect Companions like Pokemon. And instead of storing them in a computer, you can do it in one of your houses. :3

Ya, but I lose companions. Anyone know what I mean? Like I'll fight with them or something and they dissapear. I hear when you buy a house they come back, is that true? But, companions are always good when fighting. The more, the maryer!

So far my Orc Blade Master has lost 2 travel companions. Faendal got skills by a Bandit Cheiftan in an ambush, and that Whiterun Brawling Barbarian girl got killed when Hired Thugs came after me for killing Anise. I've had Lydia since level 8 and I"m level 27 now and she is still going strong. We were clearing out Ice Troll Caves at level 21.

I tell you what i'm REALLLY close to trading in Lydia on my warrior. Every time i go to power attack something she pops up out of thin air and I end up bashing her skull in! Really thinking about being a squishy I don't particularly need someone to stand between me and where the pointy end of my sword is going.

Had the same problem with the damn War Dog I bought in Marketh. On 3 reloads it didn't last 2 fights. Ultimately, the poor fella got between a Snow Cave Bear and my Beserker Rage and died for the last time. Not sure if they can be purchased again but what a waste of 500gp.

I should also add, equip Lydia with a bow and she will usually hang back in fights and plink them with the bow. I always give her the best bow I can craft and she doesn't get in the way too much. It's very rewarding when you go to loot a corpse and she that she helped pin cushion them. I've seen her one shot Horkers with a Epic Glass Bow I gave her.

I need to remember this. I took anything even remotely ranged from her when I discovered she had emptied out every last charge of my sanguine rose. Companions need time out sometimes.

Shame. He looked like a pretty good caster, but judging by his scrolls i guess I should have expected some incompetence

Which is funny; he was boasting of his magical prowess (or at least remarkable ambition) in Saarthal.

"Not everything is a competition" indeed. I'm the freakin' Arch Mage with Master-Level spells now.

I found Illia the most powerful so far. I was level 28. She is the omly companion that I've seen that has she has a killed a dragon by herself. She is a witch, with a nasty ice spell. However, be warned, if you dismis her, you lose her.
