Since you level up so quickly with my method for the first 20 levels or so, I would take the Alteration perk to reduce the cost of the flesh armor spell (I think it's oak flesh) that you can get from the Riverwood Trader. It really helps. I get it even on my warriors since it adds so much armor protection. If you're going to wear armor, don't bother with the heavy early on. Just make some leather (it has an armor rating of 30 or 31 already and the flesh spell will make it at least 60 - the flesh spells still work when you wear armor, you just don't get the bonuses from the tree) and, once you get better flesh spells, you can ditch the armor. It's a waste for a pure mage to take perks in light or heavy armor tree since you'll need them for your schools.

Oh, I am not starting from level 1...... I am trying to level up Destruction on my Conjuration battlemage.... I am trying to transition from 1H & Archery to Conjuration & Destruction, while wearing Daedric Armor, that will be dual-enchanted with reductions to zero or close to, for Conjuration and Destruction spells. I have already made enchanting & archery legendary once, 1H is next, as soon as it hits 100, then perk points will go into Destruction, along with purchasing training at the college, before I start the main quest. I will keep archery, for the bound bow, to fill soul gems, in case I run low on funds.....although I doubt I will with almost 200,000 septims on hand now. :D

1) Spam the high elf daily power to get infinite magicka against tough opponents
2) Go to Winterhold, get the novice robes for free and a few spells with the money you made on the way.
3) Go do the main questline until you get Lydia and Fus. Fus will be your CC spell, and Lydia will be the tank and moving backpack you needed all along.
4) Go do the mage quests, you'll get the Savos Amulet, Morokei and the Archmage robes, and moneyyyy
5) Go do some vampire side quests until you get the quest about the rings. Get the ring of knowledge

The rest depends on what your character is all about. Mine was an illusion mage so getting hit was not really my worry. I leveled sneaking instead of alteration and restoration. I used runes as my primary weapons (runes are costly but they do not reaveal your position). I kept the mages stone until level 20 iirc, then switched to some other stone.

You'll have to be really mobile and stuff. Use the environment (oil spouts, traps, wild animals, rivers, covers, etc...). You'll be faster than most undead and opponents in heavy armor, and if you can dodge arrows on reaction, you shouldn't have too much trouble. Especially if you have a melee follower.

1. I agree. Not even necessarily tough opponents, but for those times when there are more than one and they are staggered out.

2. If you pick the lock on the cage door in the Helgen torture room you get Novice Robes and a Novice hood for free. It leaves you with the ability to do some other stuff before making your way to Winterhold.

3. I get Faendal and let him hit the with arrows if I need to drop back to let my magicka replenish

4. Very true. Though for me when I did that, it almost seemed to take any of the challenge of being a pure mage.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
How to play a mage at early levels:

1. Start a new game.
2. Don't use weapons, only magic.

Ta-da!

Phbbbbt!

Don't forget, be prepared to die many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, .... times.

IMO "Dead is Dead" is really not the way to go when you play a mage (unless, of course you bulk up your stamina so you can run away a lot. :))

I've just never had that much trouble playing a pure mage. On the contrary, having Illusion and Conjuration spells in my arsenal can make things easier than simply using a sword and board. The only concession I'll make is to wear partial light armor until I get the Mage Armor perk.

I'm tempted to do a Let's Play with a pure mage build, on master difficulty, to show it's really not a "die many, many, many, many, many times" build, if you play it right.

He said die many (a lot of manys) times. I just added an option how not to die, since you can adjust the difficulty up as you progress. I'm not saying it is impossible by any means. I have been lucky so far and not had any real problems being a pure mage on master. You just have to play smarter.

For me making it easier to be a pure mage and not die.

• Have a follower. Gave he/she good armor and weapons.
• Retreat if need to replenish magicka
• Don't rush 3, 4, or 5 people. Play smart
• Sneaking is your friend
• take some health and magicka potions.

Since I am apparently completely unable to play smarter and end up killing every follower I have ever had within minutes of acquiring them. Maybe I'll stick with non pure mages in sr and save them for oblivion and dragon age.

With the pure mage I will start and when the follower goes in a quit and either go past them or wait till they go down, back up to get the bandits or whatever to follow me then finish them off. Seems to be working out for now. Now ask me how many I have killed with arrows (damn Faendal for walking in front of me during a battle). It is bad enough when you have shot so many followers in the back with arrows on accident you find a new follower and say "follow me, I need your help" and they look at you and say "f***f that s**t"
