Ansei Master Badass
Redguard was first. A few games back and prior to knowing much lore, I liked the fact they were the most natural warrior race. After learning more lore, particularly of the Yokudan Ansei class, I was more hooked as that is almost entirley based of the ancient samurai which has always been interesting to me.

My second race was Bosmer, I think because of the archery thing as well their speed, agility and natural stealthiness.

When in doubt, follow the fox.
Imperial, because they're supposed to be "lucky" in finding more gold. After that, I went through all the Human races. The most important thing is, to look really really hot. So I spent some time learning how to construct really hot women. hehehehe

Mine was a Khajiit female who was a heavy armored badass. I need to remake her someday.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
Nord. Almost always Nord, but I have my reasons:

1) Argonians & Khajits are just too hard to RP for me. They aren't allowed in cities (okay, well Argo's are allowed in Riften without an issue), plus the tails annoy me (especially since they keep moving after your dead), although I love them as NPCs.
2) Imperials - just can't get in to them, although they have the most extensive cannon to call upon. If I wanted "handsome" women, I'd make a man.
3) Bretons - short and dumpy, can't stand 'em.
4) Mer's - people in Skyrim don't like elves. Again, RP issues. Plus never, ever, ever Dunmer - those red eyes just FREEK ME OUT!
5) Orcs (okay, so they should go under Mers). Love their combat abilties, but can't get over the pig face. I like attractive, not frightening!
6) Redguards - I like Redguards but have always had an issue with them being the only ones that start out as dirty (they default to being covered in filth). Plus the entire attitude is that their not as good as other folks.

I guess I play Nords 'cause I like pretty people that look like me.

It's shallow, I know, but they gotta be great looking and wear the right stuff for me to want to play them.

Y'all are right though that, in the long run, unless you're a beast or mer, it really doesn't make a difference what human you play, it all equals out in the end.

I play human because they're the only ones that are accepted in Skyrim. It's just much easier to play the other races in Oblivion.

My first reaction to this thread was to say Nord, because that was the first character I fully fleshed out and did everything with. I realized though, after a little thought, that my very first character was actually a Dunmer Mage. When I first got the game, I was really drawn to the idea of being a full on dark, evil, sorcerer. Once I lost that save when my HD failed, I made a nord thinking a battlemage would be fun, I ended up loving being a sword and board destroyer of worlds. I have yet to really delve into the magical skill trees since.

I recall playing a ... very mixed class Imperial, named Ken Man. He was a mage, a warrior, an archer, an assassin. Eeyup, a big hot mess of everything! I chose Imperial because of the gold thing, which I thought would be most useful at the time. Next up, which was not long after that character, I started my first 'successful' character. A Nord man, a Ken Man, the second, that is (so Ken Man II), who was an assassin, a very ... weak, assassin. x_x

Now it's Bretons for me. Er, when playing female characters (which is next to always). For males, I still tend to go Nord. :p

Khajiit because I couldn't decide and then just went for cute kittens.
Well she didn't turn out that cute and I've played a Redguard ever since.

Bring me my broadsword, and clear understanding.
Because it's Skyrim, my first character was a Nord - it felt very natural to play. My current is a Redguard and inbetween I've dabbled with Dunmer and Khajit. But the Nord still feels the most natural, as it should.

I chose redguard cause they were natural fighters. Second time around I'd make an imperial and go roman on them barbarians.

Well for me it had to be a Khajiit. Her name was Leeloo and she did just about every single quest. That was before I got into Rp'ing my characters. She was cool. I got her up to about level 78 (yeah that was before I knew about the Ebony Warrior AND way before I had the DLC's)

I love my argonian I am playing now, as well as my nord.
The Redguard was cool.
Indifferent with Breton, Bosmer and Imperial.
Have not tried dark elf or Orc...(yet)

Orc. A former friend of mine had mentioned Oblivion before, and was talking a little bit about the new game in the series coming out called "Skyrim". We watched a preview of it On Demand (it was basically the opening of the cart ride, Alduin shows up, you make it to one of the keeps). It showed the races, and I immediately thought that the Orc race looked really cool. So really the race design is how I decided the first time around.

I started as a Nord because the person who introduced me to the game explained that Skyrim was Nord land. I wanted to start at home. Since then, I've tried a few, but now it's almost always Breton for the magic resistance. Start Breton, take the carriage to Dawnstar and walk south to the Lord Stone, and BOOM! Already 50% resistant to all magic, with a 50 pt armor boost. Not too shabby.
