how many quests can you have open at one time?

so i have a total of 44 quests open right now, is there a max amount of quests that you can have open at one time?

I read somewhere (read: source probably unreliable) that having a large number of active quests can cause lag/freezes/crashes, because the game has to keep track of so many things. I know I've never noticed anything like that, but then again I've never gone over 20 or so.

hmmm maybe i should start completing some of these instead of going around and starting as many quests as i can find

I usually have between 8-12 Main quests and around 5-10 side quests at one time. Once it reaches the higher end of those numbers, I go around and clean up as much as I can, before wandering off to become a thane or something.

Do you mean just residing in your quest journal, or do you mean making them active? Either way, the answer is no, but having a bunch of them active can be confusing. Concentrating on one at a time is preferable. As far as collecting quests, I tend to do that, and often have more than I could possibly count in my quest journal.

I have a mod that removes quest markers from everything except the map. I have no doubt on occasion I've had more than a hundred active. I never think about them; sometimes I just get a little surprise and find Amren's sword in a boss chest or something like that. I've never noticed any lag or freeze. I am on a PC though with pretty good specs for Skyrim.

There doesn't seem to be a limit, but I've found that it's a good idea to try to keep it down to as few as possible (I usually have about 10 main quests running at the same time and always clean out my miscellaneous) as there tends to be more freezes and glitches the more you have open. Of course it probably depends on whether you're on console or not.

Me - I just want to get them out of the way (especially the miscellaneous ones) since I inevitably have at lease 1/2 a dozen that I can never get cleared - ever for one reason or another. At the moment I can't clear Arniel's Endeavor (since I can't get the last burn on the warped soul gem - none of the convectors will do it); Promises Kept (no Louis - anywhere); Thane Quest - post Civil War in Riften (apparently Maven doesn't care if they're dealing crack... oh sorry, skooma... in her town); and, of course our all time chestnuts of "Kill Petra" and "Return to Esmer" - when he won't even talk to you unless you kill Parthy - and, since I don't EVER kill Parthy, it will remain on the books forever as well.
