Book Recommendations

Just thought this would be a good thing to have, as im not really sure if there is a thread already *shrugs*

-Anyways so reason im doing this is because id like to rebuild my book collection, so if you have a book you like and want to recommend id like to see it.
-I do write stuff down but I always lose my stuff and cant find it, so if its here its easy to access..

I'd definitely recommend the ASOIAF (A Song of Ice And Fire) series, which is what the show Game of Thrones is based off of that we're always talking about in the SB. I've been reading that for a while, but will move on to Stephen King's Doctor Sleep after that.

im reading the ASOIAF, i bought them a few weeks back, not disappointed, eventually ill watch the series on tv.

Ill look into Doctor Sleep, the title caught my attention, is it part of a series or just a solo book of Kings?

I believe it's just a solo book, but it has to do with a character that was in The Shining, so maybe it's kind of like a Book 2 to that.

Here is my list with some Wikipedia summaries. I own each book and recommend these with every ounce of my being!

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova:
The Historian interweaves the history and folklore of Vlad Ţepeş, a 15th-century prince of Wallachia known as "Vlad the Impaler", and his fictional equivalent Count Dracula together with the story of Paul, a professor; his 16-year-old daughter; and their quest for Vlad's tomb. The novel ties together three separate narratives using letters and oral accounts: that of Paul's mentor in the 1930s, that of Paul in the 1950s, and that of the narrator herself in the 1970s. The tale is told primarily from the perspective of Paul's daughter.

Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones
The book is set in Barcelona and its main character is Arnau Estanyol, the son of a fugitive serf who obtains freedom and eventually achieves a high status.

Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu
A Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. First published in 1871 as a serial narrative in The Dark Blue, it tells the story of a young woman's susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla.

These three are by favorite in my collection. If you do decide to read just one, I would lean toward The Historian. It's such a well written and fun book to read.

A really good book series is A Wheel of Time!

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk, particularly Haunted and Snuff.

Anything by Jodi Picoult, particularly The Pact and Change of Heart (I haven't been terribly impressed with some of her latest books, though).

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan (the whole trilogy is worth reading but I loved The Strain especially).

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell by Tucker Max.

The Dome by Stephen King (I'm not a huge Stephen King fan but I couldn't put this one down).

Read The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult over the last two days, and wow. I don't know how she consistently puts together heavy, intense stories with breathtaking twist endings, but she's done it yet again. Fantastic book, highly recommend it.

I've been reading part 1 of Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. It's... different. Kind of a post-apocalyptic scenario mixed with a period drama. It's set in an empire where the dark lord has taken over, and a small group of rebels are planning to overthrow him. Most of the normal people live as slaves underneath the wicked noble families, so there's kind of a Spartacus thing going on with the rebellion. And the magic in it is all about metals, a bit like Magneto's powers in X-men. I like the heroin of the story because she experiences all kinds of emotional transformations - first she tries to blend in with the slaves, then she starts learning about her powers, then she goes under cover and has to blend in with the nobles, so it's not the most action packed fantasy story, but it's captivating.

Brandon Sanderson is the author who helped finish the Wheel of Time novels after Robert Jordan passed away, so that's why I'm getting into his other works.
