How do you backstab a Dragon?
Sven in heavy armor, i used him for over 30 levels, hes tougher than you think

You must have had better luck with Sven than I did; he died in Bleak Falls Barrow fairly quickly. Then again, it was early in my playthrough so I may have 'mismanaged' the goofy fellow a bit.

Another decent follower that comes to mind is Erik in Rorikstead. He was surprisingly tough once I got him some better gear.
I like Erik. He doesn't talk too much and he's a good fighter. You're right though. He needs good equipment.

Shalidor`s Insights !
Whatever. Wimpy to say the least. 25% FAH! I get better than that on one enchanted piece of equipment. Apparently Shalidor wasn't just a mage, he was an underachiever. :)

All of Insights Scrolls I acquired not only cut magicka costs in half but also granted a big boost in spell power (equivalent to Alchemy Elixirs).

The ability (albeit temporary ) to cast twice as many of your choice of Destruction spells at 50% more damage can`t be considered wimpy.
The Illusion scroll boosts the duration of effect as well as level affected.
Alteration scroll really helps with Dragonhide by making it less costly and extending it`s time limit

As for equipment only Dukaan/Zahkriisos/Ahzidal masks increase magic damage from spells (25% for their specific elements)

While I agree, to me it doesn't make a difference. I already have the cost down to zero on most of them and my regen is well over 400 at this point. They just don't serve a purpose to me. I also never use potions or anything like that. I need passive. It really destroys my game flow if I have to stop and take a potion, eat some fondue or equip an item every time I go in to combat. I think I'll just stick with my passive enchantments. At least they're "on" all the time. Somehow I just can't imagine a mage, in Skyrim's environment having the time to stop and read a scroll or quaff a soda when he's being attacked. At least with the fondue (while it's regen boost in rather modest, it's 100 pt add is pretty coll) lasts 300 seconds and that's usually plenty of time to completely destroy an enemy.

I can understand that.
Outside of a few of the Standing Stones , I suppose a good passive for a pure mage might be the Secret of Sorcery power from the Black Book, The Sallow Regent.
Even if you didn`t need the magicka cost reduction in every school , the 10% boost in Enchanting could be helpful.

Absolutely agree.

Why is the alto wine always gone?
I was disapointed in the magic system for skyrim, for one thing if i remember either oblivion or morrowind had a magic spell to unlock locks, which i think would of played well with a mage/theif build.

What I'm dissappointed in is the Master Level destruction spells. They take WAAAYYYY too long to cast. While effective, they really aren't that effective. On the other hand, I have no issues with Master Level Illusion at all. :)

master level mass paralasis was disapointing to me, took way to long to cast, and usualy i get interupted by enemies, so i only use it for fast lvling and getting lots of points to put into my hp/mag/stamina
That's in Alteration or Restoration? I think Paralysis is Alteration and the rest are Restoration?

I like Slow Time but don't use it very often. Admittedly, it is a great way make your getaway though. :)

Oh man, I love it. Slow Time+Zephyr w/poison arrows+Quickshot Perk=Total Domination of Everything.

This is turning out tougher than I expected. I find it hard to accept that I can't be the one who kills. Letting my follower do it seems so wrong, and doesn't help me level up. I also have no good way to make money: I always rely on Smithing/Enchanting, but as a pure Mage I can' t Smith. I also can't make potions, so gold comes in slowly. Maybe I just have to get used to progressing slowly, but it doesn't fit with the way I like to play.

So, for those who have played against their natural preference: is it worth pressing on, or should I just accept my Karma and go back to my comfort zone?

If you're not having fun then there's no reason to continue.

You can still use Enchanting to make some good coin.

Once you get the Impact Perk, you can start dishing out the hurt yourself. Until then, learn to run fast or hide behind someone.

If you have developed Illusion, and have enough Magicka, you can repeatedly Calm and blast your opponent. As long as there's nothing hostile nearby your Magicka will regenerate at normal speeds.

My mage kills the enemies more often then not, though sometimes I stand back and let my follower/summons take them out. I make plenty gold selling loot from fallen enemies too. I do however use alchemy, I see no reason not to. But I don't make much money from it, I always forget to take the potions with me to sell. If it's not you style and not fun then play the way you like. Add in smithing if you want to. Maybe it's your mage's hobby.

I like the pure mage concept but for me i think the game penalize's you for just going down one path strictly, i personally go warrior/knight to begin with then add in the magic later. Using this method you have the armor to outlast them and kill them with magic. Although that's just my view.

Agreed. I think it is in part due to wearing cloth as their are very few perks/advantages for wearing cloth. I roll a pure mage just for the novelty and RP value now.

Just as a heads-up for the PC users here, I found a new mod on Steam today... Archmage. They somehow made it so skill level and perks increase the magnitude or duration, and lower the cost, of your spells, so your magic grows with you. I haven't tried it yet, but my next play I may revisit the pure mage idea and run with this.
