    But as soon as you're out of cover you'll be spotted, unless you are invisible. You can get really close without them knowing you're there, allowing for the x3 for the archery, x6 for the sword or x15 for the dagger.     First off you need to go into sneak mode, for some reason unless you're sneaking they "hear" you. I think it also helps being in cover or out of their direct line of sight.
