I doubt in on a Gateway. While it is possible on some laptops, it is much more complicated and time consuming then upgrading a desktop video card.
As you can see, it's no walk in the park
If you look at the specifications and it states Intel anything under graphics card, and under video memory is says "shared," you have an integrated graphics card that shares system memory. Dedicated video cards have their own ram but also consume more power; they are well worth it though ;).
First off, I don't think calling TIME's technical section of their hard news website a "blog" is accurate.
Second, I see no "lack" of quality in the article. There are times in journalism where one cannot reveal a source without causing harm to the source itself, and this is one such case...
You're right, that is just a website I go to frequently for gaming related news. Maybe this TIME article is more credible for you?

While I am unsure if you are playing devils advocate or not, your reasoning seems absurdly one sided. You argue against piracy and for the big publishers, but who is looking out for the consumer? Has anyone noticed the trend of $60 PC games lately? Why, in the past, was the norm $60 console...
Then your gaming computer prospects are incredibly limited sorry to say :(.
You could try and check out second hand computers. There's some pretty good deals on craigslist and the market is flooded.
Heh, I thought $1xx for a video card was cheap by any standards ;) but a 550Ti will go as low as $120 which is incredibly good for a latest generation chipset.
What would really help is if you gave us your budget.
For example, this setup right here costs $718

Yes, you're at the very least going to want a dedicated video card for your system, especially one with a substantial amount of video ram. I'm maxing out my 1.5gb with Bethesda's high resolution texture pack.
Since you're on a budget something like this should be a good option for you...
