What does Tales of Arise, the latest game in Bandai Namco’s long-running Tales series, look like? Lots of polygon-composed anime-styled characters, presumably? This time it’s a bit more than just that. This will be the first Tales game of the new console generation, and Namco’s come up with a way to give Tales a new visual flair.
They call it the “Atmospheric Shader” and it gives the rendered graphics a nifty hand-drawn look. the planet of Pahna, setting of the new Tales and the home of an oppressive regime that has enslaved the Dahnian people for three centuries. It’s up to our new heroes, Alphen and Shionne (plus a few others they’ll meet on their journey) to send the tyrants from Rena back where they came from. Watch the Atmospheric Shader work its magic in the Tales of Arise trailer released recently…
“We want Tales of Arise to represent a new milestone for the Tales of franchise,” said Yusuke Tomizawa, producer on the game. “The game has a new artistic direction, making the most out of the Unreal Engine and our newly developed “Atmospheric Shader” to push the graphics quality, and make players feel like they are in a painting. With a story that is more mature and hits on more essential themes than previous games we hope players will be fully immersed in Alphen and Shionne’s journey. We can’t wait for you to be able to play the game later this year.”
That date will be September 10, 2021 and the platforms will be Playstation 4, Playstation 5, XBox One, XBox Series X and PC.
