The LEGO LotR is pretty fun (not to mention hilarious) and can be played single player.

Huh. I've never tried a LEGO game before. But I dunno if that's really what I'm looking for. The closest thing to a good LotR game in general that I've ever played is LotRO. In terms of environment and exploration, it did a lot right. But so many of the quests were so tedious (go kill 45 orcs! Bring me a dozen giant spider eggs! Commit genocide on every turtle you see so I can make delicious stew!). And in the main storyline it seemed that my character was always arriving moments after the most interesting bits of the plot had already happened.
