Trying to buy a house in whiterun but can't find steward- glitch?

Hi all,

[Warning: Minor Spoilers regarding the Stormcloak Rebellion questline ahead]

So I'm with the stormcloaks and we raided and captured Whiterun. Now, I want to buy a house and get married. But I can't find the steward (who, I last remember him being this guy Poventus Avenicci who whines and complains while standing next to the Jarl, but I'm assuming he is gone with the stormcloak rebellion and by the fact that he's literally not there).

So I did some research I heard the Brill is the guy to talk to if you do the stormcloak campaign???

Well it's funny because this whole time since I compelted the battle of whiterun quest for the stormcloaks, I've been wondering why theres some random dead body in the streets named Brill.

So you're telling me that Brill died in the battle of whiterun?? How do I buy a house then? Can he come back? What do I do??

I can't afford any of the more expensive houses yet, and more imprtantly my character wants to have a family IN whiterun and not any of the other cities.

What should I do??

I did the Imperial questline but not only did I buy the house before that questline, Proventus decided to start chilling at the table overlooking whiterun after the battles. You go past the Jarl's Throne to the right and there is a giant door sort of straight ahead. Maybe you should look there during the day.

Maybe you should talk to the new Jarl of Whiterun, also. I have to buy a house from the new Jarl of Windhelm.

Yeah, the first thing I did was try talking to the new Jarl. Can't buy a house from him.

Went up the stairs to the right to the big table, can't talk to that guy either.

In fact, let me put it to you this way, I've talked to every person IN Whiterun castle and looked in every room, and I can't buy a house in whiterun from them. Any other solutions?

Same thing happened to me ive even tryed restarting it and hes still there -_-

Thats why you do it before the raid.

I had the same problem--the following solution technically is cheating but the fact that it resolves a glitch should justify it
1. go to Brill's dead body at the entrance to Whiterun
2. press tilde (or whatever opens the cheating console)
3. select the body
4. type "resurrect" and hit enter
The only catch is you wont be able to unlock any more steam achievements--if you're running the game on steam and care for such things

That works for PC but is there a solution for PS3...Or is there any way to get the cheat console on PS3?

Have you brought the dragonstone to Whiterun?

You could also get a bounty from the bannered mare, do it, and the adventure log would point you to the steward.

When I had to find him (havnet done civil war quest yet) he was outside on the balcony where you trap the dragon. I searched everywhere and couldnt find him and walked out there. Try that maybe hes just hiding

If he's not next to the Jarl he's asleep in bed, or out on the big ass balcony.

Yes, I finished that quest way before the Stormcloaks took over Whiterun.

I'll try the bed and balcony and let you guys know if I've found him.

No luck in any of the beds or on the balcony...I guess he's just going to stay dead in the street. Maybe in the next update they will fix it.

just one question..... why did you wait so long to buy the house in Whiterun, that is the first one you should have had the opportunity to purchase.

You could try going to Solitude and to blue palace. Go down to the lowest floor and say if you've completed the entire stormcloak questline all of the jarl's and thier stewards and kid's are there. You just have to take over whiterun for balgruuf and proventus to be there. Try talking to them there. Most of them will just say "fluff you" (Or words of that effect. Try asking Proventus there.

I've had 5 characters and sometimes he's there and sometime's he's not, I don't think it's a glitch with anything I feel he's just lazy or takes time off, I've been through every scenario everyone here has talked about and I have had an opposite turnout. I think sometimes he is there and sometimes he isn't, I've woken up and went to go look for him and he hasn't been there, went back a few hours later and he is, just walking around. Sometimes he sits and eats and other times he can be found lollygagging, but I don't think it's a glitch.

You do realize it's brill? And brill is dead. How could he be lollygagging?

If Brill is alive you can often find him in Jorrvaskr (sp?)

I already have the house I just wanted to go back and decorate it LOL
