The PSP Will Die When JRPGs Say It Will

Sony's PlayStation Portable, a piece of tech that was sleek in the early 2000's (and still looks good if you ask me, even though its battery is horribly bulky by modern standards), is still getting games, thanks to the niche market of obscure translated JRPGs. They are all digital releases, so the expenses involved are just licensing and translation, but still. Now there are two new RPGs heading to PSP. Old to Japan, but new to us.

First is Class of Heroes 3, translated by Gaijinworks, which was originally released in the Far East back in 2010. It is a traditional dungeon-crawler starring big-eyed people with Asian names. Nothing too spectacular, and inexpensive to convert. Gaijinworks also brought over Class of Heroes 2 back in 2013.

The second, also from Gaijinworks, is Summon Night 5, this one a little more curious. Not only was it more of an effort than a Class of Heroes game, but the West never got Summon Night 1, 2, 3 or 4. Gaijinworks founder Vic Ireland said that since the fifth game is the most recent, it's much easier to gather the art assets and code base than it would be with the earlier games, especially since numbers 3 and 4 were ports.

Also, if you beg, you WILL get a physical copy, but only if there are enough of you. This really happened to Class of Heroes 2. 2,500 people signed up for a rare physical edition, which was just enough to make a profit, and Gaijinworks had it produced. If at least that many people want a collectible physical version of #3, or Summon Night, they will make one.

It's kind of remarkable that a product that was new when the original iPod was the peak of technology is still somewhat profitable enough to do something like this. I should note that the Vita is being singlehandedly kept on life support through the same method.
