Dave, The Quiet One.
Speak With The Leader Of The Companions

NOTE 1

Right, first off before you start this Quest Line, clean out your save games files, there is no need to delete all of them though, but too many can cause loading or lag issues.

Having done that, during this walk through you will see that I written ****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** Now the reason for this is incase you accidently chose the wrong speech option whilst in conversation or you missed something or you just happen to die & believe me that can happen at the inappropiate times sometimes.

Also DO NOT save over an existing quest save, again just in case things go south ( Stuff Up ). After you have finished the quest then you can clean the save game files up.

Now, this walk through is just a guide, This will be the 4th time I've done it without a single problem. So if you do it the way I do then you shouldn't have a problem completing it either.
If you are unsure of where you are suppose to go refer to either your radar, map or quests.
........................

In your miscellenous quests there is a quest saying " Speak with the leader of the Companions " so this is what we'll do first. From the main gate in Whiterun walk or run up the hill until you reach a well. There are 2 market stalls on your left then a set of stairs also on your left, go up them to the next landing where the path will go either side of a tree. go right and up the stairs that you now see in front of you. At the top of those stairs is Jorrvaskr your destination.

Inside Jorrvaskr

First, if you have a follower like Lydia or whoever tell them to " wait here " . You don't need them for awhile and a follower seems to create certain annoying glitches that I will get to in a few minutes.

Now you are looking for, Kodlak, the leader of the Companions, so go to your right and head towards the end of the room. There is a set of stairs leading down, so go down & through the door that says " Open Jorrvaskr Living Quarters ".

Jorrvaskr Living Quarters

It's advisable not to talk to anyone else except for Kodlak for the moment.

Now you will 2 strips of long carpet, one is in front of you leading away and the other is on your right. Go right and walk to the end into a small bedroom. There will be 2 people in here sitting at a table in the far right corner of the room. Approach Kodlak, the person on the right & say " I would like to join the companions ", then say " I have much to learn " ( I've tried this part of the quest many ways & this is the best way to go for now. )

Kodlak will instruct Vilkas ( The other person there ) to take you outside for a few rounds. Follow Vilkas or just head back upstairs and follow the arrow out to the Companions Yard.

At this point the Misc quest " Speak with the leader of the Companions " is completed anf a new Quest has started called " Take Up Arms ". Check your Quests in the menu. It will now be on the left side of the menu as a nornal quest.

********IMPORTANT************
If you haven't told your follower to wait whilst inside then make sure you do so now. The reason is that if you go for a few rounds with Vilkas & your follower is watching your game has a 75% of glitching up & the end result is having either Vilkas or Farkas following you around with their sword drawn and they will constantly start a consersation with you regardless of who you are talking to. This has been proven on several occasions.
***********************************

Talking Up Arms

Companion's Yard

Before walking down towards Vilkas ****** Do A Manual Save Now ******

Now walk down and stand in front of Vilkas & he will either start talking then start attacking without warning or he will simply tell you take a few swings at him. If you are equipped with a sword and a shield, simply shield bash him a few times then hit him with your sword a few times. Don't try the Rambo approach & go all Gung Ho as it tends to cause the game to glitch up & you will need to do again. Also don't use a power attack on him, you only need to block his attacks and hit him a few times. It's that simple.

After that's finished you will get a new directive and that is to take Vilkas's sword up to Eorland, the Sky Forge Blacksmith. So walk on up to see Eorland.

The Sky Forge

It doesn't matter what speech options you use when talking to Eorland as they all work. After a rather short conversation he will give you a shield to return to Aela. At this point you receive another new directive and that is bring alea her shield. So go back to Jorrvaskr, enter and make your way back to the Jorrvaskr Living Quarters.

Jorrvaskr Living Quarters

Again follow the carpet to the right as you did last time only this time turn left when you go through an archway. There is another strip of carpet going left to right here, so go left, through another archway & open the door on your left. ( If at anytime you can't find Aela simply check your mmenu and make sure the " Taking Up Arms " quest is marked as the current quest and simply follow the white arrow. After a pleasant conversation with Aela you will then get yet another new directive, which is " Follow Farkas to you new quarters. So now you follow Farkas to your new quarters and again after a short one sided conversation the quest : Taking Up Arms " concludes.

Now you may well get a new Quest in the menu called " Hired Muscle ". If not then talk to Farkas, regardless of what he just told you and you should get it, if for some reason you don't it then go see Aela and she will give it to you.

****** Do A Manual Save Now ******

Hired Muscle

Now your quest needs you to confront somebody and after a short conversation you and the target will fight in unarmed combat, in other words a fist fight. THe secret here is to just keep hitting them until they submit. When they submit restart the conversation with them, follow the prompts and then you will get a new directive to return to Farkas or whoever gave you the quest. Once you tell whoever you had to report to that the job has been done the quest is completed.

Talk to Farkas straight away and you start the next quest which is called " Proving Honor "

Now, if you already own the house, Breezehome in Whiterun, then simply get your follower to follow you back to Breezehome.

Proving Honor

You need to talk to Skjor start the conversation, follow the obvious speech prompts, then talk to Farkas and again follow the obvious speech prompts. You need to go to Dustman's Cairn, look on your main map of Skyrim, it's marked with an arrow. You have 2 choices here, one, you can simply fast travel straight there if you've already been there or run out there. Either way Farkas will follow you, he is your new follower on this quest. Your other follower will be back in Whiterun.

Dustman's Cairn

****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** No matter if the game auto saved or not, do the manual one.

This is one mission that if you go all Gung Ho ( Rambo ) on you will die real quick. If you use caution after the first room you pass through you will be able to handle the Draugr Death Lord and the 3 - 4 Draugr that are in the next passage. After dealing with them, find the wooden door, open it and follow the next passageway down. You should go through a big spider's web, just keeping going until you enter a large room. Go down the steps and have a look around. On your left there is a slightly raised area that has a throne on it & an Arcane Enchater on it's left.

****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** Just in case things go south ( Stuff up )

Walk past the throne and there is a small room with a iron bar door that is raised up. Now if for some reason Farkas follows you into the little room, DO NOT activate the lever.
If Farkas is still standing near the throne then enter the little room and activate the lever & you will be locked inside the room. Don't worry, it's all part of the quest.

Farkas will say something witty and then you will have an interesting cut-scene.

After the door opens again you will have a conversation with Farkas then it's time to keep moving. You loot the bodies for any gold or potions then head out the doorway behind Farkas into another room then a twisting passageway. As you go around a sharp left hand corner there will be 2 Silver Hand's standing there. Kill them both the best way you can, loot them and keep moving towards the wooden door you see in front of you.

****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** Just in case things go south ( Stuff up )

You enter a small room that has a restless Draugr in it, even though it's still laying down they are easy to spot as they look like they have brown shorts on. Kill it, then open and go through the next wooden door. You will enter a big room, there is a Silver hand standing with their back to you on the ground level and there is another one on the next level up, kill them both, loot them both for gold & potions. Then make your way up the stairs and turn right go past the open door that is now on your left, keep going and you go through an archway into another room. Go straight down the stairs towards the wooden door in front of you, open it, kill the 2 restless Draugr that will appear on your right, then go left down the passageway.

****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** Just in case things go south ( Stuff up )

If you rush down this passageway you may find yourself overwhelmed by both Draugr and Silver Hand. So just go slowly and dispatch them as well as you can. As you work yor way down the passageway you will see a chest, it has an Adept lock on it, pick it, loot it and then go throuh the wooden door at the bottom of the passageway.

****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** Just in case things go south ( Stuff up )- these maunal save are for your own protection.

You will now enter a massive area, ahead of you amongst the mist you will see a walkway up high on the right hand side. It has a centre pole, in the middle of that walkway you can just make out the outline of a Silver Hand, kill him from where you are standing if you have a bow. There are 2 more Silver Hands ahead, one is standing next to a fire & the other is ahead of you but hidden by some ruins. Kill them both, loot the bodies for gold & potions then open and go through another wooden door. go down the stairs, watch for the pressure plate trap in the middle of one of the stairs. There are 2 more Silver Hand at the bottom, kill them, loot them for gold & potions and then open the steel door that says " Open Dustman's Crypt "

Dustman's Crypt

You are in a long room and you can see a wooden door at the other end, there is also a Silver Hand on the right of it standing against the wall. Kill him, loot him then open the wooden door. You enter a caged walkway up high, now this is where things can go south in a major way if you go all Rambo and rush in. The end result may well be the death of you. Follow the passageway until you reach a massive room, which was the room below you when you entered the caged walkway. There are at least 6 Draugr as well as 5 Silver hand along the way so don't just rush, take your time. As you enter the room there is a chest on the left hand side, you need to loot it as it has the key you need for the door up ahead. Open the big wooden doors with the key you just found and follow the twisting passageway to a small room, there are 2 skeevers in the passageway and 2 more in the small room. In this room there are 2 wooden doors, one is locked with a novice lock, there is a burial urn and a potion behind it. The other door you open, kill ther skeever thst is there and turn right walk a few steps, stop & look to your left, you should see a passageway. Go down it, there is a skeever around one of the corners and the passageway opens out into a cavern. There are 2 spiders to your right, kill them and then move along the right hand wall until you reach a bridge cossing the creek. As you cross you should see a Draugr Death Lord and a Draugr Scourge beyond the 2nd bridge, kill them and head to the other side of the cavern into a another passageway. Keep going down until you reach a steel door.

.****** Do A Manual Save Now ****** .

Enter the room, head straight to the back and get the Dragon Shout " Fire Breath ", then turn around, unsheath your weapon and get the Quest Item with the white arrow pointing down at it, also grab the soul gems that are there. now you will have a fight on your hands as Draugr attack you from every angle. After all the Draugr are dead, loot the chest that is to the right of the Dragon Shout Wall, go up the steps that you see on the other side and exit through the whole in the wall. Follow the passageway along until you come to a lever, activate it and a doorway will appear, go through into Dustman's Cairn.

Dustman's Cairn

Turn right, head up the stairs until you reach the door that says " Open Skyrim " and go through.

Skyrim

Now head back to Jorrvaskr, when you reach the bottom of the steps outside Jorrvaskr, Vilkas will start a conversation with you, just follow the obvious responses then you will receive a new directive " Follow Vilkas " . So just follow him around the back of Jorrvaskr until you find yourself standing in front of Kodlak, Farkas, Aela, Skjor & Vilkas.

Now you have to defeat them all at once in combat............. NAAA Just kidding.

Just listen to what is said you will complete the Proving Honor quest.

Congratulations you are now a Companion...

I am on my 3rd play through, a little harder and different, Thanx for the refresher!!:)

Dustman's Cairn is probably my favorite quest of the companion's quest line. I just wish all the crypts opened at the end together to leave for an epic battle.
