Diplomatic Immunity

After all the problems people seem to have with this simple quest I decided to do a walk through. This is my 5th time I've done this quest & I haven't had a single problem with it and I am doing it again now step by step.

Now it's advisable if you make sure you have a spare set of armor & weapons before setting out on this particular quest, the reason for this I will explain later.

Ok, so you have met Delphine back at the Riverwood Inn & she tells you to meet her contact at the Winking Skeever in Solitude. So you travel to Solitude either by Fast Travel if you have already been there or by coach if you haven't.

If you have gone by coach you will have to run or walk up the hill to the Solitude Gates & enter.

Now if this is your first visit to Solitude there will be a cut scene of an execution, watch it then when you have control of your character turn around and you should see the Winking Skeever on the other side. It has 1 barrel stacked on 2 others on the left of the doorway & there is sign over head of the doorway.

Once inside Solitude proceed to the Winking Skeever, which is the first building on your left.

Enter the Winking Skeever and do a manual save, then approach Malborn, the Wood Elf, and follow the speech prompts.

** IMPORTANT ***

You must follow the speech prompts otherwise if you jump ahead or exit the conversation then Malborn may just walk away thinking that you have nothing to give him, which will leave you with nothing once inside.

**********************

You should give Malborn any weapons, armor, arrows, lockpicks ( A MUST HAVE ), potions, money, etc that you will need once inside as you can't take anything in with you that is removable in your inventory.

Now rememeber at the beginning of this walk through I mentioned about having a spare set of armor & weapons, well if do have them equip them now.

After the transaction head back outside, turn right, go back out through the gates & walk down the road until you see a road off to your left, there should be a coach on the corner. Turn down that & you will reach Katla's Farm where you will meet Delphine.
Now if you have already been to the farm before you can simply fast travel to it.

Sometimes when you give Delphine the rest of your gear a dragon attacks you and if you had already equipped like I mentioned you can fight the dragon otherwise you may have to hide & let the others kill the dragon & there is no fun in that...lol.

Once the dragon issue has been dealt with give Lydia the spare gear and anything else she can carry because once you give Delphine the rest of your stuff you won't be able to get it until you meet back in Riverwood. So it's a very good idea to either give Malborn or Lydia all your money as their is less chance of it getting " Lost ". I gave it to Malborn because sometimes Lydia will disappear entirely or gets killed by some random somewhere.

Change into the Party Clothes that Dephine gives you & then you are ready for the party, so you just enter the wagon.

Once you have control of your character you will be outside the Embassy high up in the mountains. One of the guests arriving at the same time as you should dark skinned male, who you will have the pleasure of meeting inside.
Approach the Thalmor Wizard & she will ask for your invitation, simply follow the speech prompt to show her the invitation & then proceed up the steps and follow the path to the right & enter the Thalmor Embassy.

Thalmor Embassy

There are several ways to do this particular part of the quest but the way I'm describing is the best & easiest way.

Once inside you will be greeted by the Thalmor Ambassador Elewen, all you have to do is play nice until Malborn cuts the conversation short. Once that happens walk past Elewen and approach Malborn & ask him for a drink. Take the drink & approach Razelon the guy you saw outside, who is now sitting on a seat. There is a Thalmor Guard standing beside him, ignore the guard and start a conversation Razelon. Choose the speech prompt " Here, I brought you a drink ", then choose " Actually there is something you can do for me & " I need you to cause a scene. Get everyone's attention for a few minutes ".
Then walk back to Malborn & wait for Rezelon to create a distraction. Once you hear him say " Attention please everyone..... "

Malborn will then say " Let's go before anyone notices us ". Just follow Malborn without stealing anything or starting a conversation with him until he leads you to the Larder, the chest is indicated with a white arrow pointing down. retrieve your gear & equip whatever weapons & armor you have and then open the door that is behind you and go through.

** Do a manual save here.**

Now this is where things can get very messy very fast. You can go all Rambo & go hell for leather and fight the guards & the Thalmor Wizard that is upstairs or you can choose to sneak.
I chose to sneak with my bow drawn & an arrow nocked ready to fire. Make your way slowly past the open door ahead on your left. There are 2 guards inside the adjacent room, you can only see 1 of them as you pass. If you are lucky you will get past without being noticed which will make things easier for the next 5 minutes. Sneak past and enter the room on the right and head back behind some tables on their end. Wait hear until you hear the guards say " Well, we better get to our rounds".

Wait a minute or so then sneak back to the open door that you snuck past earlier. Now there should be a guard at the other end of the room with his back to you. If you are using a bow then just kill him with an arrow from the doorway and sneak back out into the hallway. The other guard will turn up in a few minutes and you will hear him say " I'll find whoever did this " ( Or something similar ). Move forward again and kill him silently if possible.

*** Do a manual save now ****

Now what you are looking for is not in this building anyway, but forget about that for a few minutes and sneak up the stairs on your right when you enter the room and kill the Thalmor Wizard quickly. Now the whole upper floor is cleared. Search all the rooms for useful stuff like potions, ingredients, soul gems & gold and then head back down the stairs you came up.

Search the room where you killed the 2 guards & then proceed towards to the hallway on the far right or just follow the carpet. Follow the hallway until you come to a door that says Open Skyrim.
*** Do a manual save now **** then open the door.

Outside The Embassy

Now this is where things will go south real fast if you're the Rambo type. But you need to get to the other building that is on your right and there are least 3 Guards & 1 Wizard in this courtyard, but that number can double if you go all Rambo. There is usually one guard in the centre courtyard walking around. If you are using a bow then drop him. There are 2 other guards patrolling aorund the edge of this whole area. There is also at least one wizard skulking around somewhere, he usually appears when you least expect it. My advice is KILL THEM ALL anyway. They are only Thalmor.....lol. After you have kiiled them head to the door of the other building. The door is facing the courtyard & it says " Thalmor Embassy, Elewen's Solar. Open the door.

Thalmor Embassy, Elewen's Solar

As soon as you enter there is a guard across the room looking towards a set of stairs & across the room on the right there 2 people you hear talking, one of which is a Thalmor Wizard. Again if you have a bow dispatched the guard first and then sneak across the room until you have a clear shot at the person that is talking to the Wizard, but you can't see him until you kill the other person, then kill the Wizard. Enter the Wizard's room and loot the bodies and search the room for useful goodies. Now if you followed this walk through in the beginning & gave Malborn your lock picks then you will now be able to pick the lock on the Display Case that has an Expert lock that is in this room.
Exit out of the room and go straight across the main room you first entered until you reach what looks like a bar with a few wine bottles on it. Go around behind it and loot the little storeroom for a few ingredients. Then back out & proceed up the stairs that the first guard was looking towards. At the top of the stairs go left and enter the bedroom and loot whatever items you want, there is a small storeroom off the bed room that has a few useful ingredients and potions in it. Exit the bedroom and go straight down past the stairs to the other bedroom loot it and then go back down the stairs.

Once down the stairs go right and turn right again into Elewen's study, go to the chest that is against the left hand wall, it's marked with a white arrow pointing down and take everything.
Then proceed down the stairwell that is also in that room until you reach the door. now if you have looted the bodies you will have the key required to open the door that says " Thalmor Embassy, Dungeon. If you didn't loot the bodies then you will need to pick the Master lock.

Thalmor Embassy, Dungeon

*** This is a good time to do a manual save ******

Proceed downstairs and kill the guard walking near the cells, then loot the chest and take the book on Esbern. Talk to the prisoner & iniate the conversation so he tells you what he knows then free him. At this point 2 Guards will enter the upstairs landing escorting Malborn. Try to kill them before Malborn is killed and you will meet him again in Windhelm. But it doesn't matter if you don't manage to save him or not. Now loot the 2 Guards that you killed and get the Trapdoor Key so you can escape. Once you have the key proceed back downstairs to the cells. The trapdoor is across the hallway from the cells, unlock it and go through to Reeking Cave.

Reeking Cave

Kill the frost troll & pick up the Unusual Gem that is laying beside a dead Mage under the ledge that you are standing on when you entered and exit the cave to end the quest.

.....................................................

I went Rambo on them. Killed everybody but the prisoners

duel wielding deadric axes with 31pts of fire damage each and 31 points of shock on one and soul trap on the other, easily overpowered them

BRING BLACK SOUL GEMS IF YOU HAVE THEM AND PLAN TO GO RAMBO

I wrote the walk through the way I did because there was a lot of people that saying things went wrong, or the quest was glitched or something similar & that particular quest is really simple.

I always use sneak and a bow, I only resort to using a sword when I've been detected & the enemy is in close.

This worked for me. The mage in the courtyard is actually standing deep in shadow in the doorway of the Solar. He is really hard to see, there are walls to left and right so you cant sneak behind him, and didnt go down in a single bow shot like the other guards did. Hurray for detect life Shout, the most useful one in the game.

So I wanted to never resort to any guides, spoilers, or cheats the entire game...been a RPGer all my life and in the old days we did not have such resources so I wanted to keep it at that. After 20+ attempts and countless hours lost I cannot get through this and think I am in big trouble; please keep reading because I desperately need your help. I was going to post a new thread on this in the main section when I realized if I could find a guide to this quest that you experts could help me.

I am L20 Khajjit; I have focused on One Handed Weapons and Magic mostly while earning other traits such as Smithing, Alchemy, Sneak, etc by the work I do in the game. I am not a big fan of Archery and rarely have been in RPG games so although I keep a bow and arrow I have rarely used it or powered it up thus far.

I also have auto save off so my PS3 will not self destruct but am OCD on saving and keeping at least 1-2 saves back in case I change my mind about a decision; somehow through all this I screwed up and that did not happen. When I met the elf in the inn at Solitude I only gave him bow/arrows and some healing potions; I am not sure why but I was very suspicious of the situation and losing things along with my understanding that not much was needed to kill off 1-2 guards I may encounter...boy was I wrong. Then when I went back to meet Delphine a dragon came; I had most of my gear so I offed him pretty easily...gave my stuff to Delphine and went to the party; got threw all that and that is when the trouble begins.

By not bringing hardly any of my stuff I cannot get past when the elf lets you get your stuff back and you go through the door...I have tried sneaking/1 kill with arrow which does not work. I have tried going rambo with my Magic/Shouts but get wasted every time; I have tried leaving the place and going somewhere to pick up a sword and some armor I have stashed (Mistwatch Tower is my spot until I buy a house) but when fast traveling back I am immediately outed as a fake and destroyed at the entrance of the embassy; I have tried searching around and have found I can take all the food in the kitchen and the wood cutter's axe but that weapon sucks; I have tried using my claws (closest I have gotten thus far) but no matter what I cannot get past all the kills required to move on beyond this first part.

Then of course much to my dismay my past save is more than 2 hours old!!! Way too much to cover again and such so I do not want to go back....my current save is right after I get my gear from the chest in the kitchen.

So the question is what to do? I need your help!!!

I really don't understand why so many people have problems with this quest as it's one of the most easiest & straight forward quests there is.

No some have a gimped game. I did everything as posted and still "a cornered rat" never kicked off (the next one in the chain.) Ravyen along with most of the active people in the shoutbox have tried for literally hours to help me get the next one to kick off with no luck. i hate this quest. seriously.
