XSeed Nearly Killed Themselves Making Trails In The Sky For You

Next time you complain about a well-made JRPG not getting an English release and how "simple" it would be to just translate the thing, here's a story, courtesy of Kotaku, that will help you gain perspective. Game translation is not a simple job, especially if you're working with a limited staff of people.

In 2011 the localization company XSeed released Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for PSP (and later PC). Critics praised the game and it gathered a cult following, but there was one problem: it ended on a cliffhanger. There was another game following this one in Japan, and it had twice as much content. Consisting of 1.5 million Japanese characters, the game had more text than Tolstoy's War and Peace or the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. It required months of 14-hour workdays and sleepless nights. And then editing began, and the bugs started showing up. At one point the stress got to staff writer Andrew Dice so badly he nearly committed suicide, but a friend got to him just in time.

The project ultimately took nearly five years and a lot of dedication most game makers wouldn't have. It's because of XSeed's desire to see Trails in the Sky get its second chapter in the US, and their willingness to do whatever it took, that it happened at all. When you read the full story, you'll be grateful to XSeed for breaking their backs and will probably feel like rewarding them with something, like money. How about getting a new game in the deal?
