    There are two possibilities.
Either we are alone in the Universe, or we are not.

    Both are equally Terrifiying.

    upload_2014-10-20_20-22-8.png

"In light of the recent extraterrestrial incursion, this council of nations has convened to approve the activation of the XCOM Project. You have all been chosen to lead this initiative. To oversee our first... and last line of defense. Your efforts will have considerable influence on this planet's future. We urge you to keep that in mind as you proceed" - Spoksman of the Council

Hello there Forumer's, & welcome to my new RP!

As you might have gleaned from the title, this Rp will be set in the XCOM universe, specifically the events of the game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This is the first of its kind on this forum as far as I can tell, so you'll have to bear with me. This story will follow a similar arc to that of the game, except that participants will take on the role of squad members as opposed to a position of command. As the story progresses characters will have a chance to develop & interact with each other, forming friendships & sharing losses as they fight a new, Extra-Terrestrial enemy.

The cap for number of participants will be 5-6 Roleplayers for the sake of squad-size realism, but I doubt this will be a problem. Extensive knowledge of the game will not be necessary, feel free to ask me any questions if you get confused. I just love to discuss this stuff!
Also, this site is useful if additional information is required during posts/applications. In-game statistics are not important, but they should give you a rough idea of how combat scenes should play out.

    Rules

    1. No Overpowered chars. Obviously. To those that do know this series, we will start at the beginning. Reverse-engineered tech, such as psionic powers & plasma weaponry can come later in the story. You want the best stuff? You gotta earn it.

    2. Scripting other people, otherwise known as Meta-Gaming, will not be tolerated. this is a roleplay, not a fanfic, so please accept that some things are outside of your field of control.

    3. This will be an 18+ roleplay. Though this is primarily because certain enemy tactics are quite gruesome, I will accept other forms of mature writing on the grounds that people do not over-do it. You know what I'm talking about. :D

    4. Strong language or other profanity against fellow Roleplayers is banned. Prepare to be kicked from this thread if repeated incidents of this nature occur.

    5. Regardless of whether this Roleplay proves popular or not, I will not be accepting Character cards that display poor grammar, lack of detail, or breach Rule 1.

    6. Here is a basic CC template. Additional writing is not essential but encouraged.
    Name:

    Age:

    Gender:

    Ethnicity:

    Squad Role: [Rookie/Squaddie/Support/Assault/Heavy/Sniper]

    Personality: [Likes, dislikes, fears etc.]

Have fun as well! I hope to see you guys on the squad.

    Unit types

(make sure to mention weapon type in CC [if required], XCOM utilises specific weapons with each class).

(All types, bar Heavy, carry a pistol sidarm.)

Rookie: New to the XCOM project, but have lots of potential & enthusiasm for their job. Become Squaddies upon completion of their first mission. Weapon- Assault Rifle

Squaddies: Have experience on the field, but belong to no specific class. Weapon- Assault Rifle/ Designated Marksman Rifle

Support: Act as scouts on the field, using light armor for maximum mobility. Weapon- Designated Marksman Rifle/ dual Pistols

Assault: CQC specialists, carry heavier armour so as to resist melee attacks. Weapon- Shotgun (+ combat knife)

Heavy: Hard hitters, utilising heavy armour for wading into the thick of combat. Weapon- LMG Machine gun (+ RPG)

Sniper: Stay at the back, picking off enemies from afar. Weapon- Sniper

    Enemy Species
Sectoids- Thought to be a clone-based species, Sectoids are physically frail, & act as scouts on the field. Have limited Psionic abilities, primarily Mind tricks that enhance the combat capabilities of allies. Use Plasma Pistol in combat
    Threat level: Low

Alternate Variant: Sectoid Commander- More durable than the regular variant, Commanders have increased Psionic powers, including offensive mind attacks & brief mind control of opponents.
    Threat level: Moderate

Thin Men- Thought to be Reptillian in appearance prior to genetic modifacation, these humaniod creatures act as infiltrators of the human society, & as such are lightly armed. They carry a lighter version of the deadly Plasma Rifle & are incredibly acrobatic in their movement. Also capable of using poison spit attacks, which cause lingering damage.
    Threat Level: Low

Muton- Mainline infantry of the alien collective, Mutons are large, hulking beasts using deadly Plasma Rifles & powerful Alien Grenades. Advanced alien Alloy armour makes them very resilient in combat, & they are genetically modified to the point where their original DNA is untraceable. They possess a unique, pack-like nature in combat, rallying allies with what is known as the 'Blood Call'.
    Threat Level: Moderate

    Alternate Variants:
Muton Elite- Thought to be more impressive both physically & mentally than their regular counterparts, the Elite variant has yet to be seen in the field, with our only knowledge of them being data gathered from crashed, unmanned UFO's.
    Threat Level: N/A
Berserker- Juggernauts among even Mutons, these monstrosities prefer melee combat over extended firefights, & physical attacks from these aliens are usually fatal unless quickly stopped. The most durable Muton class, heavy firepower & teamwork is required to bring them down.
    Threat level: High

Outsider- An energy based organism, only found at active UFO site's. seemingly linked to an orange crystal of unknown purpose. Capable of carrying a mix of Plasma weapons, these aliens are hard to hit due to their ability to seemingly phase in & out of existance, providing they stay in proximity to their respective Crystal.
    Threat level: Moderate

Floater- Airbourne enemy, thought to have shared an origin with Mutons. Cruel Cyborgian creatures propelled by jets installed on their back, Floater's can easily flank oppenents or simply float above enemy cover, hence the name. Despite their inherent speed these creatures are relatively easy to kill.
    Threat level: Low

Alternate Variant: Heavy Floater- Superior armour & weaponry to regular variant.
    Threat level: Moderate

Chryssalid- Insectoid creatures that represent extreme threat to civillian & soliders alike. Limited to melee combat yet surprisingly durable, victims of Chryssalid attacks that die become Zombies, that attack former allies & act as wombs for Chryssalid larvae, which later hatch (killing the Zombie) & restart the process.
    Threat level: High

Cyberdisc- Named for resembling a floating disc in its defensive mode, Cyberdiscs are a rare yet significant synthetic threat. Capable of enduring several hits & dealing out lots of damage, Cyberdisc's float around the field, delivering heavy ordnance (including Alien grenades) to hostile locations. Usually accompanied by Drones. Thought to have a hidden bio-logical component.
    Threat level: High
Support: Drone- Found healing Cyberdiscs & other synthetics or lightly attacking enemies. Fairly easy to kill, yet are small targets. If stunned Drones can even be re-programmed to fight for humans.
    Threat level: Low

Sectopod- Massive Bipedal robot fielded by aliens, basically a tank. Most resilient enemy type, heavy explosives are required to bring them down. Uses heavy cannon to level enemy positions. There has yet to be an XCOM victory that has involved the destruction of a Sectopod.
    Threat level: Extreme

Etheral- Leaders of the alien collective. Yet to be documented/encountered by XCOM. Immense Psionic abilities that include physical Psionic attacks & shielding.
    Threat level: N/A

    A Brute among Beasts
    Key Characters
Central Officer Bradford- American origin. Known previous Military History, including combat training. Works with the council to ensure worldwide safety from invading forces. Provides individual teams with background information on upcoming missions, & takes notice of higher ranking troops. Sociable with fellow XCOM members despite the fact his position sometimes requires him to withhold information. Is keen to repel the alien threat, but dosent believe Operations with high casualties to be worthwhile.

Dr Vahlen- A German Astrobiologist working as the head of research at XCOM HQ, she looks past the face of the ongoing war & tries to figure out the alien motive. Performing autopsies, interrogations & analysis' of the enemies Weapons, craft & social structure, Dr Vahlen seeks to master these new advancments for the benefit of humanity, regardless of the moral standards these experiments may have to drop to. Her Obsession for recovering enemy technology often causes her to forget about the struggles of XCOM combatants. Despite this, she takes the death of soliders personally, especially if their objectives were based upon one of her requests.

Dr Shen- Older than most of his Co-workers, this Chinese Technicican with years of experience serves the XCOM project as head of the Engineering department, producing weapons, vehicles & armour designed in research. Despite his age Dr Shen gets on well enough with younger people, despite failing to understand their willing to fight such a imposing menace. He is always keen to try out new technology, & becomes grievious when his work fails to save the lives of footsoliders.

Sergeant Jacob Field- A young man for his rank & experience, Jacob is an African-American ex-fighter with a deep prejudice for the aliens. He believes them to be an space-faring collection of slavers based on his observations of their crude technology, & that they are not invading but merely kidnapping humans for forced labour. The sole surviving member of Operation Rotting King (first encounter), Field was temporarily placed under the effects of what is known as 'Mind Control', & was forced to fire on his squadmates, injuring them & even killing his best friend.
Now the acting Commander of all the squadrons, Jacob directs them against arriving threats as his mental trauma from the event has made him unfit for combat. The Sergeant hates everything in relation to the aliens, & whilst he does permit troops to use reverse-engineerd technology it inspires suspision within him.

Oh, hell yes. Count me in! I'm not sure what I'll apply with but I'm thinking either sniper or support at the moment.

I just want to add. Squadsight > Snap Shot. That's the end of it :p

Glad to see you Epic. Never knew you were into this game!

To anybody else interested, time constraints mean that Key characters & enemy types will have to be added tommorow. If you believe either of these to be important to your Cc (some of you may already know the enemy types, but a few previously non-existant Key figures will appear) then I recommend checking up on this thread again tommorow.

Just to be certain T, starting gear is the same as in-game, right? Basic projectile weapons and standard body armour?

Yep, ballistic weapons are the same as those in the game. Except DMR (which is a semi-automatic) & dual pistols they're the same.
How this RP will work is that periodically I will have Research/Engineering introduce a new type of technology (e.g. an Arc Cannon) that could improve on characters current equipment & provide new objectives for on the field. Just to keep things fresh.

Epic, nice CC. Will ge glad to have Liz (is that alright for a short name?) on the team.
Terrik, your CC was very detailed (like the MCPO part), but my only request is that you change slightly his fear category to include his loss of comrads on the field. He dosent have to be over-reactive about their deaths, but concern for his fellow squadmates could lead to interesting character development. Dont list it now, just remember that when we start. Miller will be just like 26th century Master Chief... though presumably a bit more sociable.

Right, will add you two to the list, work on my own character card (who will probably be squad leader for the sake of co-ordinating the Roleplay) & complete those two reserved posts, hopefully all this morning.

    HEIGHT 5'7"

    WEIGHT 130lbs

    DIALOGUE COLOUR Blue

    SQUAD ROLE Sniper

EQUIPMENT Standard-issue body armour, sidearm and sniper rifle, along with her own personal combat knife.

    APPEARANCE
    vi_portrait_fan_art_colored_by_zeronis-d76mgwc.jpg

Similar to the above, but without piercings and tattoos. Also has black hair instead of pink.

    PERSONALITY
    POSITIVE TRAITS
Friendly and intelligent, finds it easy to talk. Strong moral obligations to her missions.
NEGATIVE TRAITS Can seem twisted or mentally unstable, because she finds satisfaction in a particularly elegant kill. Can be stubborn or stand-offish in some cases.
LIKES Talking with friends, satisfying kills, ambushes and surprise attacks.
DISLIKES Selfish people, rude people, anyone who acts/speaks before they think.
FEARS Insects, anything with long, spindly limbs. (Chryssalids would absolutely terrify her, but obviously she doesn't know that yet)

    BIOGRAPHY
Elizaveta was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and was raised there until the age of 10. Her parents decided to move away in the late 1990s, taking Elizaveta to England. For the first year living there, she was taught English. Then, she joined a local secondary school. She was the subject of her fair share of bullying, being one of the few foreign kids, with a very Eastern accent; most class-mates originally thought she was Russian.
After leaving secondary school, she returned to Ukraine to join the military. It was noticed that she was an excellent marksman, and she was funneled into sniper training. There, she excelled, putting her excellent education in biology to use. She worked well in a team and alone, and quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant.
Recently, she has been recruited into the unheard-of XCOM Project. She is uncertain what adventures this new job might bring but this hasn't stopped her from being extremely excited about the posting.

    Name: Jennifer Scott

    Dialogue color: Red

    Age: 25

    Gender: Female

    Height: 5'8"

    Weight: 160 lbs

Build: The perfect balance of fat and muscle for her size. Very strong due to years of working out and using heavy weapons.

    Ethnicity: American

Appearance: (I can't really find a pic for her but I can describe her appearance. Take Jack from Mass Effect 2, lose all the ink, give her some good teeth and give her an even buzz cut and you've got Jen. If anybody can find a pic that fits this description I'd appreciate it. And obviously she's not topless besides a leather bra like Jack.)

    Squad Role: Heavy

Equipment: Standard XCOM body armor, pistol, combat knife, light machine gun, rocket launcher and grenades. Lots of grenades.

Personality: Cold, sarcastic and very slow to trust. At first glance Jen appears uncaring, mean and generally seems to not like people. She says little, talks in gruff, curt sentences when she does and tries to get to know people as little as possible. She might laugh at your jokes and return a grin but she feels very little. She approaches sex casually but is terrified of being in a real relationship. She keeps everyone at arms length because she's terrified of being abandoned. She's very intelligent, highly dispassionate and can be very cruel. She hangs around people for as long as she can use them, then abandons them before they can do the same to her.

Likes: Guns, explosives, bourbon, working out, sex, fighting, the feel of a gun's recoil, dark, quiet places.
Dislikes: Doctors, therapists, having to take medication, overly nice people, people who try and be her friend.
Fears: Getting close to people, losing someone she cares about, anything that can get inside your head.

Backstory: Jen lost her parents early in life. Her mom died of a heroine overdose when she was 3 and she never met her dad. He was in prison by the time she was born. She grew up in foster homes across Las Angeles, each worse than the last and all of them abusive in some way, shape or form. Physically, psychologically, emotionally, they all colored her life. When she was 18 and done with High School, just barely graduating, she joined the U.S Marine Corp as a chance to get fed, clothed and out of the city.

Jen was a natural. The yelling at boot camp never bothered her, the physical training stimulated her and she loved weapons training. All the abuse, yelling and unfair surprises that came with being a marine in training Jen had done before. She excelled in everything and was one of the best soldiers her instructors had ever seen. Just as good as any man in her group and better than most. The Marines had given her a family, something she had never had before and she embraced it. She was brave to the point of being reckless, carried out orders with perfect discipline and was fiercely protective of the men and women in her unit.

She served with distinction for 6 years and had proven herself in combat during two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. She showed an aptitude for heavy weapons and became infamous for her accuracy with a .50 caliber machine gun and her enthusiasm for using and disarming explosives. She learned that blowing up a bunker with a rocket launcher could save as many lives as disarming a roadside IED. It was during her second tour in Iraq when the aliens invaded and her world was shattered.

Jen was a 2nd Lt. and part of a 30 man platoon assigned to hunt down insurgents in northern Iraq. They were engaged in heavy urban combat when an abductor ship landed right in the middle of the combat zone, dropping in abduction modules and ground forces to kill anyone who resisted. Both the Marines and the insurgents were taken completely by surprise as they were gunned down by plasma fire. Jen's friends were slaughtered around her but the worst part was the sectoids. They mind merged with her squadmates who then turned on her. She didn't understand what was going on and couldn't kill her own men but they were tools of the aliens now. For two days Jen had to hunt and kill them and their sectoid puppeteers one by one. 10 of the aliens in all, each with a brother or sister Marine that Jen had to put down. She was rescued once the aliens left but she was scarred forever. The fierce protector she had once been was gone. These things had killed the only family she had ever known and how she had nothing to live for but vengeance. She was in a mental hospital back in the States being treated for P.T.S.D when XCOM recruited her. She doesn't care who they are or what they plan to do with her. So long as she gets to kill every single one of those little grey mindfluffers and drink herself to sleep every night it's worth it.

    (What he looks like.)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Religion: Christian

Hobbies: Likes to hunt, fish, and is pretty open with people. He loves to drink with his friends.

Family: Father - John Miller, Mother - Joyce Miller, Older Sister - Heather Miller

Personality: Jake is a great guy to be friends with. He is caring, supportive, and all around generally nice. He likes to drink with his friends, and even doesn't mind drinking with a stranger.

Positive Traits: Jake is an expert shot, as he was a member of the United States Special Forces, under the Navy SEALS. That being said, he loves to get into close range combat. He loves Close Quarters, and is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, as well as using his knife. He is very agile, despite his size, and also very strong. His body fat is pretty much 0%, which means he is 220 pounds of almost Solid muscle. Jake also has seven years under his belt in the military as a total, and four in the SEALs. He served in Afghanistan, and Iraq. He has mastered the art of Guerrilla warfare as well. He also cares for his fellow soldiers very much.

    Negative Traits:
He really only has one major negative trait, and that is how much he cares for his fellow soldiers. He will go out of his way to help someone who is wounded, and that has put him in a few dangerous spots before.

Dislikes: Rude people, anyone who threatens or hurts his friends or family.

Fears: Jake has fears, just like any other soldier, however he has learned to control his fears, and use them to his advantage in combat. He learned this skill when he first joined the Navy SEALS, and it has stuck ever since.

    Aspirations:
He hopes to one day Marry, and have children.

Quirks: His almost always cheerful attitude. He likes to disassemble and reassemble his weapons when out of combat, and it is something he does when he is nervous. When he gets nervous in combat, he may flip the safety on and off on his weapon, or he may calibrate his weapons sight. He also may play with his knife.

    Philosophy:
"My loyalty to Country and Team is beyond reproach. I humbly serve as a guardian to my fellow Americans always ready to defend those who are unable to defend themselves. I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my profession, placing the welfare and security of others before my own.
I serve with honor on and off the battlefield. The ability to control my emotions and my actions, regardless of circumstance, sets me apart from other men.

" (<-- Excerpt from the Navy SEAL code.)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gear

Armor: Jake wears heavy armor. He wears this because he is an Assault Specialist, and his job is to get up close, and in the thick of it.

    Main Weapons: Assault Rifle

Secondary Weapons: Shotgun for when he really gets up close, a Pistol Sidearm, and a Bowie Knife.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    History/Biography:

Jake was the second child, and the first and only son, born to two Military parents, who lived in Fort Worth, Texas. He was raised in Fort Worth his whole life, along with his Sister. He attended High School, and upon graduation, joined with the United States Marine Corps, where he served for three years. During this time, the military paid for his college, which he Attended online. After those three years, he had achieved the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He then went to Naval Special Warfare Prep School, where he began his training as a SEAL. After almost 1.5 years of training, he joined DEVGRU, or SEAL Team 6, and was first deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, were he became one of the best soldiers the SEAL program had ever seen. He was Promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer, and that is the rank he holds now in the Navy. Very recently, he was recruited into a new, multi-national program known as XCOM. He didn't really know what to think, and didn't want to leave his old squad mates, but went ahead anyways. It couldn't be to different from the SEALs, could it?

Very good Simus. One of the key characters has a similar story. May I ask whether you planned for this incident to occur prior to the activation of XCOM? Because there shouldent really be any prior military records of alien encounters. Maybe have it that nobody believes her about the aliens except XCOM?

BTW Terrik, what colour are you using?

Simus, I'm not sure if you're aware (I'm assuming you are because it's too major to be a coincidence), but Jack's real name is Jennifer :p Jen's similar to Jack, in a good way, that is. Being a tough-guy outside over a more emotional personality. I like her!

T, yeah, everyone can just call her Liz. That's why I put it in her name :p

Now, with regards to the sniper perks, Simus... The only time I give a sniper Gunslinger is when I assign them to be my special agent, taking covert ops against EXALT. That makes them extremely useful with their pistol in the pick-up missions. Now, for snap shot... I used to use it a lot, but now I use squad sight almost exclusively. My first game of XCOM after Enemy Within came out, I got a sniper called Elizaveta Ivanova (my character is inspired by her, because I still remember that fantastic sniper). I gene-modded her so she could jump really high, got extra height advantages alongside Damn Good Ground. She had Mimetic Skin; combined with Low Profile, that meant she was invisible most of the time. She had an aim stat of 150 (ridiculously high in case you're not sure on the stats), which basically meant she had a 99% hit rate on her shots. On most missions, I'd find a sniper nest to put her in, then she'd just squad sight the hell out of every single alien on the map. She managed to actually one-shot a Berserker at one point. Damn, she was a fantastic sniper; I've never had one like her again :p If she'd had snap shot, I'd probably never have remembered her, because she'd just be a generic sniper, shooting at what's within that relatively small area of sight. And that is why I love squad sight :p

I gotta go with Simus on this. Squadsite just wasnt that useful to me (though I havent used a sniper in a while ever since Bishop 03 died. Miss that guy). Enemies always killed my 'sightsmen' before my Sniper could get a good angle.

I can see why people would go with snap shot; it's definitely a more consistent perk. But in my opinion; when squad sight's useful (which it is, very often by my playstyle), it's REALLY useful :p

So, is the cast list getting changed after your CC's up? And the aliens; we're rolling similar to the game in that aspect too, right? In that the more dangerous aliens aren't revealed until later on?

Jen's encounter happened before XCOM at the onset of the invasion. Nobody at the hospital believed her about the aliens, especially because she didn't have a name for them. Only XCOM really gets her lol.

And it appeared, Epic, that you've found me out about Jen's name. I love Jack obviously. She's much more interesting a character than Jacob ever was and I wanted to port her to this. But we can't start off as psionics and assault was already taken so I had to make someone BASED off Jack while still feeling organic. So, you have Jen! Glad you like her!

Also, did you guys notice that the voice actress who does Jack is the PA system during the tutorial? And that both Jack's and Ash's voice actresses are two of your stock female voices for your soldiers?
