The house in Riften has a door to the outside. You can go home/ leave home without passing through the city gates. Handy if you are a vampire...

if you want to become thane of every city, it is a requirement for the jarls of cities that have a buyable house.

Your wife cannot stay in the Arch Mage room, even if she was one of the students. Really annoyed me having to pay money for a real house. It seems perfectly safe for storage, add in the storage from your student room, and Mages guild seems to have more storage than you can shake a stick at.

that sucks. The mages room is bad ass. already furnished with a plops ton of stuff I would of liked to made that my house. Which is everyoines favorite house? There was the one for like 8k i was thinking about buying just because it had more stuff than the others.

In my opinion the "best" house is in Windhelm however its spaced out over 2 floors. In my opinion the "most well organized and best located" house is in Whiterun, 2 steps from the fast travel destination, all crafting tools next door, but wheres the nearest Arcane Enchanter?

I am going for the cheap one at Whiterun next time. It is close to a Fast Travel point, an excellent Smith and other good shops, and has functional storage (plenty of it, but not pretty). IMHO its only disadvantage is that the Enchant Workbench isnt very close. I dont like the more expensive ones I have tried, they seem like mazes with little or at least inconvenient storage.

can you purchase an enchanting table to put in any of the houses. I have only purchased the Breezehome and only have the Alchemy Lab. I purchased all the upgrades though.

every house except the one in Whiterun can have an enchanting table. the closest one that I can recall in Whiterun is up in Dragonreach with the Jarls Wizard.

Now, if you are on a PC, there is a mod that replaces the alchemy table and the table next to it with one big table with an alchemy station and enchanting station on it. It also includes another satchel that I use to put all my soul gems.

The home in Markrath is not to bad and sort of close to the fast travel point. It's right above a store too. Down side is that the blacksmiths are across town.
It has both tables in it, four useable bookshelves that hold 18 books each, a lot of storage containers, one manniquin, a bunch of weapon plaques, two weapon racks that hold 2 weapons each, four small display cases, cook area, and two big dinning tables. Probably a few other things but I'm doing this from memory at work :D

The arch-mages quarters has an enchanting table and an alchemy lab, and a crap-load of storage. Unfortunently, lots of loading screens to get there.

Whiterun while small and lacking an enchanter may be the best house. Its got a ton of storage, has a forge next door, Lydia and is right at the fast travel spot and in a central city for those that dont ft.

I use it as my home base. Its got 4 npcs who buy wepons (5 if you are married). My smithing cloths and gear goes in the first chest, ingredients in the chest by the lab. Wepons in the hall way, armor in the bedroom chest and misc crap in the other dressers. It kinda bugs me that Im able to cram 5 sets of armor in a night stand.

The only thing I cant keep there is my book collection which is in Marakath. The house in Marakath may be the best layed out, but the city blows. Who really wants to live in a cave carved into cliff with a fancy door? Where does the smoke from the fireplace go? I imagine that its always cold, damp and smells like a locker room. Nick, the bed sheets must always feel wet.

haha, I can see your point and hadn't thought of it in that way. lol

In the whiterun house, you could put you ingredients in the satchel on th alchemy table and then use the chest for books or potions.

Can you check out the houses before you buy them? I currently only have act 1 done and ability to buy thehouse in whiterun. Or do I have to complete the main quest first

nope, can't check them out.
Wait... actually you can sort of check out the one in Windhelm by doing a quest

You can take a picture tour of each house here at Wikia. I imagine theres Youtube tours as well but I'm in work and can't get to that site.

Is there really any reason to purchase more than one house in Skyrim? I drop 25k gold on the Solitude house...moved my wife there...and noticed, there was no difference. I thought maybe her store would make more, or she would have more gold to barter with.

Bit disappointed...but maybe I'm missing something?
Because real p'imps invest in real estate, yo...word to tha grey beards

Just want to let you know, the Arch mage quarters is NOT a safe place to store items. The chests and barrals there will reset and any loot you wanted to hold on to will be gone. The only safe places to drop items off that you wish to hold on to are any houses you bye and the Students room at the college.

Buying the first, cheapest home in Whiterun is the best choice for starter characters simply due to the price/available storage. Its the only house I have bought, even though I am the Arch Mage, Harbinger, and Nightingale I always return to a Stormcloak run Whiterun.

Ive acutally got all my stuff stored in the new sanctuary by dawnstar. Is that safe place to keep it? ive had all my stuff there like a month(game time) and I dont think anything has disappeared. I kept it in a drawer at dragons reach for longer and still nothing was gone.
