Tonight we dine in Hell.
I like followers, but they usually have to be some sort of thrall or mage. They are pretty interesting to have, just as long as they stay out of the way and NOT charge in ruthlessly, especially because I am a mage/sneak. As for Lydia, she'd ruined my perfect strategies a but too often for me to handle. I took care of her in a certain Daedric quest, if you know what I mean. :p

I have a somewhat decent solution to this problem... just talk to your companion before you sneak or go into battle and choose the "wait here" option.... Although not to practical for all out fighting... you can do this before a sneak battle... also useful if you are in your house, just tell her to wait there for you.

There was a Dark Elf in the Drunken Huntsman you can hire, if you're an elf (I was Bosmer) you can get her for free after you hire her the first time, she seemed alright, she was more interesting than Lydia. Think she says interesting things, can't remember I've only used her once.

my brother gets so pissed off when he doesnt have a follower when he finds that orcishor warhammer off flames that is worth 1000 septims but weighs 28 pounds. then he drops lighter stuff that end up all costing twice as much as the thing he is making room

If you want to sneak up on someone you can just ask your follower to wait in the corner whilst you do your business, simple as that.

that doesnt work becus even if you tell them to wait, they charge in as soon as they think your in danger

i think it is positively hilarious when i kill my companion. course, i have to load from my last save whenever it happens, but it is worth getting a laugh whenever im having a bad day

I use them for pack mules and nothing else. Once I get a decent amount of carry weight, I let them run off and do whatever

I have usually played as a lone-wolf too - it may go back to those bad memories of M'wind or Oblivvy "escort" missions (where you had to get a suicidal someone with 2 health-points and a pointy stick past a bevy of enemies...).

Lydia drove me nuts, and I happily "sold" to the Blades as soon as posssible - which made my Breezehome much quieter. Never really trusted her; she had her own bed, but always just sat in that chair staring at mine. She kept saying how keen she was to help me; but if I gave her lifesaving gear, she'd moan about it like a sulky teenager.

Then I hired that Marcurio fellow, thinking his magical zapping would complement my whacking nicely...not so much. Sold him to the Blades too. Erik the Slayer, I just kind of liked. At first, he seemed like the nephew I never had... but soon, the Blades had all three wanted recruits.

One bother with followers (for me) is that I feel responsible for them. Maybe it's "hangover" from those escort-missions of old, but if I have a follower, I get distracted worrying they're okay. I took Iona out on one mission... and spent more time worrying about her than whatever it was I ("we") was up to. Terrible things happened, best not to speak of.

THAT SAID, I have been well-served by Jenassa, who has saved my life many times and been a great co-fighter. The irony(?) is that she's a one-handed fighter/bow sort, same as me; and the two of us have worked far better than my attempts at other-type followers. I made a full suit of glass for her, and some mean daggers - which she will dual-wield indoors. I wanted to practise, my own marksmanship (so I hired her to take the heat) - and she proved herself truly fierce. She also once gave me a freebie... agreeing to face death unpaid.

There is a ~combination~ of two of your points about followers I would mention. They do fall behind, and they can get in the way. Once, I went overland toward the goal, and she fell behind. There were several outside baddies there, and I had a job whacking them - and when I turned, I saw a scary looking warrior charging up the road at me, weapon-drawn... needless to say, that was her, Jenassa, finally catching up - and with her weapon out (just like they sneak if you do) - I thought I was toast...!

As I am a hoarder, I would only use Lydia & co for carrying my gear.

Even in the mini missions were you need to help out someone random outside a cave, and they ask can they come, I always say no, as they are so annoying, and I have killed so many people with the Dark Brotherhood, by accident, or just in temper that I wish for these fools to leave me to do the mission and they can wait outside. I have yet to do much with the companions as I have a bug which makes each of them interrupt everywhere I go as if I have asked to speak to them.

And yes another reason not to use these hindrances, these are my skill increases and kills. Go back to your castle!

I have no such feelings for my followers. I was shooting lightning bolts at a bandit chief, Lydia got in the way, ZAAAAAP. Next minute I'm walking away with her steel armor to sell to the nearest merchant.

companions are for warriors or the occasional ruin at low levels

Master Thief and Assassin
Not all followers are bad. Because Lydia suddenly glitched out and never returned, I had to hire yet another follower. My 4th. Jenassa is by far my favourite as she is actually good at sneaking which means when I'm sneaking around all the time, she does too - and does it well.

I do have to agree with some of the points, however. The most annoying is them getting stuck in a doorway...

Khajiit will smell them coming.
I have nothing against followers.. I just hate their glitches, that is all. They never get in my way. They die rarely. Even on my Assassin, Mjoll with Sneak Enchants and Muffled Boots, could keep up with me to a certain distance, just close enough to roll and backstab. On my Warrior, they are a BLESSING. Taking half the fight? I play on Master, so that means life or death to me xD I recently got Belrand, and he isn't the most durable companion, but he has a Familiar, and he seems to be okay with bows. He usually goes in, summons a Familiar, attacks to half health, retreats and fires with arrows while Familiar tanks. And, if I need something to tank, I got Argis back home :3

Agh! Same here! It can't be too far... unless those necrophile bandits stowed her body away into one of their hideouts... I just really want my precious items back.

In my newest save, I have lost already three... no FOUR followers and one of them was my wife. : ( They just disappeared and never came back. Even though they cause a lot of trouble, I go with them rather than alone. I have tried so hard to found their body, but no, I can't find!

I don't know anyone who I would like to follow me next... all my favorites are gone, gone, gone! Lydia, Belrand, Janessa and Uthgred. All of them had good armors and many good items.. :'(

Maybe I'm just going to travel alone... for now.

Kir the Silent

I prefer to go it alone, or if I must have back up it's usually a Dead Thrall Dremora Markynaz. And I never give them items unless it's generic magic items I find.
