This sounds like a joke, but what is the difference between a wife and a housecarl?
(Mjoll is charming, would make a good wife, but that was never an option. Aela the hotness, I mean huntress, is also alluring, and could make a fine den.)

The difference between a housecarl and your wife "spouse"

Housecarl will only live in one house and can't move to any other house your spouse can move with you.

Your spouse will cook for you.

Your spouse will occasionally surprise you with a gift.

Your spouse will set up a store "somewhere" and earn a cumulative 100 gold or more a day for you.

You can buy and sell items to your spouse.

Also sleeping near your spouse will give you the resting bonus "Lover's Comfort", allowing skills to be improved 15% faster for eight hours

Housecarls are for personal companionship, not necessarily for a relationship but they can be. For example, you can marry Lydia, but shes meant to defend, follow, and advise you. Wives on the other hand are obviously for a relationship and cannot leave your house (sounds pretty sexist, I know). I don't think any wife is best, but I think there is a superior companion that can be your wife. In my opinion, the best companion/follower you can marry is Mjoll the Lioness. She's invincible, hawt, and really good with two-handed weapons.

EDIT: Nevermind, you can't marry Mjoll. But she's the best companion :)

On one of my characters I married was Aela, it was my warrior character so I thought, hey sounds great, on my other one, the mage, I married Ysolda because I didn't find any decent Female Mages. :/

You can marry Mjoll. The best spouses are the ones that are also followers, so when you're traveling together, you can sleep anywhere and get the lover's comfort bonus. That's why I married Jenassa on my most recent character.

I finally figured how to start the Marriage quest with the necklace. Both Mjoll and Aela were interested. Mjoll followed and regailed me with many a story, some very endearing in earlier quests. I tricked her out with the finest Dragonplate in all Tamriel. After so much history together I wanted more.

Yet, one gaze at Aela and I wanted to join the Companions just for her. I became a werewolf on her promise to hunt together. I cured myself of the disease, but not of my lust for her. So I tried to marry her. I got the necklace and she noticed me, not lying. Our wedding day I awoke fully rested.

I waited in the temple from dawn to dusk as the priest prescribed, but she didn't show. Once I tried to wait one hour and it told me I failed to attend the ceremony, tho I was always there. Everyone was so mad at me.

I made apologies and tried again, fast traveling to Whiterun and back to collect her and she was there when I arrived at the temple. We marring and I got 10 gamer points!

She asked where we would live, to which I replied "Solitude," a property I had recent acquired and decorated. It's really the best digs over those in Whiterun, Winterhold, or Risten. But She wasn't there (????) . Now I have to search for her. What's a newlywed to do?

Did you fast-travel straight to Solitude after the wedding? Your spouse walks from Riften to whichever residence you choose, so it would take that long in in-game time for them to show up (which, from Riften to Solitude, is quite a while, particularly since she will be taking roads).

I married the Lioness; she is a good follower (although I rarely use her) but she is a good fighter. The Thaner (my wife named her that because of the repetitive Thane comments) was accidentally killed after I got tired of her as well.....

I married that sexy M'joll on my main character. She follows me around with my two DBIs.

On my second character, I married Uhtgerd The Unbroken. I saw the option to marry her and I pressed ASAP, not knowing about the marriage option or that you can't get re-married.

Yes, I fast traveled. I just couldn't wait for our honeymoon! Walking? Well I could have escorted her, had I known. I went to the other 3 houses, and by the time I returned to Solitude, she met me upstairs. For our honeymoon, we're going nirnroot hunting in Blackmarch.

She worked at the Silver Blood Inn? Isn't that the private "club"? I think the Foresworn raided it and killed everyone.

you can only marry her if you do a certain dark brotherhood quest

On my first I married Ysolda. Haven't married a woman since.
On my current character, I'm debating whether to take Aela as my bride or wait for the patch so that I can marry Lydia. Decisions, decisions...
