This is going to be my first Fan Fic. While the main character as well as others may be made up, some of the characters portrayed in the Story were real live Marines with the 1st Marine Division in World War 2, and their characters will be based on the research I have done on them. This story will take place between 1942-1946. I have always had a passion for Military history. My whole life I have wanted to grow up and join the military, and now, after my completion of college, my goal will be achieved. I chose the Pacific Theater of War because it involved some very, very brutal combat. The United States Military was the only line of defense standing between Japan and the United States. They fought both for Revenge from Pearl Harbor, and to protect the civilians of the USA. As far as I know, most people support our soldiers, while some do not. However, almost no one really realizes what hell they go through on the battlefield, fighting to protect you and your family. So this story will signify the hard ships, the psychological issues, and brutalities of combat that soldiers go through, defending their country while most of us, and I am sorry to say this, sit on our lazy rears, going about our normal lives. Like stated earlier, this story will follow the 1st Marine Division, and their encounters and missions. The main character will be Jackson Miller, a Staff Sergeant of Baker Company, part of the 1/1 (1st Battalion 1st Marines). Jackson Miller will help lead the 4th Rifle Platoon in Baker Company in the beginning. Here is a basic set up of a Division, so you can get the jist of how it would work in combat:
  • A squad is made up of three fire teams, in addition to a Corporal or Sergeant as squad leader. A squad is capable of integrating a variety of attachments from a weapons platoon.
  • A rifle platoon consists of three squads, and a headquarters element made up of a Platoon Commander, a Platoon Sergeant and a Navy Corpsman (there may be two Navy Corpsmen in larger platoons). The Platoon Sergeant, usually a Staff or Gunnery Sergeant, advises the commander, usually a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant, in making decisions.
  • A weapons platoon will substitute for the squads.
  • a 60 mm mortar section (three squads, each of one 60mm mortar and three Marines, all led by a section leader);
  • an assault section (three squads, each of two teams, which each consist of a Submachine gun and two Rifle Marines), led by a section leader (thirteen Marines total)
  • a medium machine gun section (three squads, each of a squad leader and two teams, which each consist of one .30 Cal Browning Light Machine Gun and three Marines).
It is led by a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant.
  • A rifle company consists of three rifle platoons, a weapons platoon, and support staff. It is led by a Captain, typically with a First Lieutenant as the Executive Officer and second in command.
A weapons company will substitute for the rifle platoons an 81 mm mortar platoon, an anti-armor platoon, and a heavy machine gun platoon.A Headquarters and Service Company consist of a headquarters platoon, a communications platoon, a service platoon, and the Battalion Aid Station.

  • A battalion consists of three rifle companies, one weapons company, and one Headquarters and Service Company, commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel.

  • A regiment consists of three battalions, led by a Colonel.

  • A Division, commanded by a Major General, comprises three infantry regiments and an artillery regiment, and additional specialized units, such as armor. (End of Division Structure Information)

Personality: Jackson is originally very Optimistic, and happy, but as the War Progresses, he becomes darker.

He is an ace with his rifle, and also able to wield other weapons if need be (He has used a Sub Machine gun before, a B.A.R., and has operated .30 and .50 Cal machine guns). He is generally liked by his soldiers. He cares for his soldiers, and makes friends with them. He leads from the front, which makes his soldiers appreciate and like him.

Quirks: He cleans his weapons often.

Philosophy: "Semper Fi"

Gear

Armor: The only armor he really has is his M1 helmet, the standard issue, and only, helmet of the United States Military in World War 2. His clothes may offer a little resistance, but not much.

Main Weapon: Jackson uses an M1 Garand Rifle (He will occasionally use another weapon when needed, but this is his main weapon). (During the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Marines were originally equipped with M1903 Springfield Bolt Action Rifles)

Secondary Weapons: M1911 Colt Pistol (His fathers), KA-BAR, M1 Bayonet (Used on the end of his Rifle, and also in his Hand), Mk 2 Grenade (When used, he carried two), his Helmet, a rock, what ever he could use as a weapon really.

Very Short Biography:

Jackson Scott Miller was the middle of three sons born to the Parents John Miller and Betty Scott Miller. Jackson attended High School, and upon Graduation in 1940, joined the Marine Corps, following in the path of his father and older brother (His younger brother would join as well). On December 7th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing the United States into World War 2. The first Marine Division was mobilized, and he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, after which his father gave him his old Colt M1911 Pistol. In 1942, Jackson was shipped to Guadalcanal, where he would land on his Birthday, August 7th. Jackson would go on to fight in the New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa Campaigns.
