For fifteen-thousands of years the Space Hulk Tomb of Madmen has drifted in and out of the warp, collecting ships both old and new and often bringing their crews with them. Most go insane and are driven to suicidal madness to escape the warp energy and foul creatures that inhabit the graveyard of metal and rock. Hundreds of terrible stories of doomed travelers and foolish looters color the Tomb of Madmen but there are also tales of great riches and technology that can no longer be found anywhere else. Some have even said that there are ancient cogitators from the Golden Age of Technology that can teach even the most basic of men how to construct every wonder of that age and great manufactorums that can create all of these machines for the user. This space hulk has appeared once again in the Segmentum Ultima, in the cold void between the stars, and its lure has attracted attention from all across the galaxy.

The closest imperial world to notice the Tomb of Madmen is the civilized world Progressio, a wealthy and prosperous world protected by the wider imperium and its moon of Boros. Boros is the home of the Boros Paladins Space Marines, a relatively young and optimistic chapter founded just over three hundred years ago. The chapter suffered a terrible civil war 100 years ago and though it prevailed and was determined pure by the Inquisition its chapter master was sentenced to a crusade of penance in the Eye of Terror for 100 years with only 10 of his best brothers and a strike cruiser for support. The Boros Paladins have brought the fight to Chaos wherever they can be found in order to try and redeem themselves and to pave the way for their brothers' return, now collectively known as The Crusading Martyrs. Their crusade is complete but they have yet to return and the rest of the Chapter grows anxious. Knowing the fickle nature of the warp it is possible that their lost brothers could be on the Tomb of Madmen and so the Boros Paladins have pledged their support in finding and exploring the space hulk.

Recognizing the importance of this space hulk and the support of the Boros Paladins the Imperium has organized an expedition to explore and secure the vessel. The Adeptus Mechanicus and Imperial Navy have arrived to secure the void space around the vessel and have requisitioned several Imperial Guard and Skitari regiments to help secure it, along with several Space Marines from other chapters who volunteered to help. The Boros Paladins and other Space Marines will form the vanguard of the expedition while the other forces protect the Mechanicus elements as they study and catalogue what they find. No one knows what awaits inside, be it glory or damnation, but it will most certainly be an adventure.

    Rules:

    • No godmodding: Don't script other people's characters without discussion, don't make incredibly overpowered characters (A daemon prince or a C'tan for example) and don't kill other writers' characters unless they've agreed to it
    • Please try to make all of your posts at least a paragraph (Five sentences) and please try to post at least once a week
    • Please try to keep (real world) cursing and lewd speech to a minimum in the IC thread. I don't care what you do here in the OOC
    • If you get bored of the RP or know you have to leave for an extended period of time, please communicate with the rest of us
    • This RP will be set in the eastern part of Ultima Segmentium in the year 016 M42. Please write an appropriate character
    • All character types are welcome as long as they fit the setting. This is a big scary space hulk so most of us should either be part of the imperial expedition (Mechanicus, Imperial Guard or Astartes) Or someone from a race that could survive on a space hulk (Some member of Chaos or an ork). I don't imagine the Tau or Eldar would be interested in this sort of thing and being a tyranid would be a little hard to write (Although I'm willing to be proven wrong!)
    • I will be playing a Space Marine Libararian from the Boros Paladins and the commander of the Astartes elements of the expedition. I'd like to have three or four other imperial characters. More is okay. Chaos or Ork characters could be quite interesting but may be on their own for a while
    • Have fun!
Now let's see those CC's! Please post them here. I will post mine when it's done.

    Name: Simus Psyrakon

    Rank: Space marine librarian, codicier

    Title(s):

Commander of the Boros Paladins 4th company
Commander of the strike cruiser Candle of Faith

Age: 205. Appears to be in his late 50's

    Sex: Male

    Eye Color: Light brown

Hair Color: Silver, long and straight down to his shoulders. It can be easily seen as he has yet to earn a psychic hood.

Height: 7 feet 4 inches, 8 feet in power armor.

Weight: 813 lbs. 1813 lbs in power armor.

    Equipment:

Mark V Aquila power armor painted librarian blue. The emblem of the Boros Paladins, an orange fist with a burning halo, is on the left shoulderpad and the symbol of the librarium is on the right.

.998 godwyn pattern bolter with red dot sight. Simus has had this bolter ever since his days as an initiate and it has never left his side, not even during his days as a lexicanum writing report scrolls for the chapter's history.

3 drum magazines with krakin bolts. 50 rounds each.

Mark XIII "Hell's Teeth" pattern chainsword, painted librarian blue and fitted with psychic crystals to focus Simus' power. He has had this sword for over a hundred years and keeps it in pristine condition despite constant use.

A silver force staff with a large, heavy head in the shape of the imperial aquila and a large spear tip at the other end. The staff is perfectly smooth and polished to a mirror shine, reflecting the light around it. It was forged specifically for Simus upon his ascension to codicier and he considers it one of the greatest gifts he has ever received. he is able to channel bolts of psychic lightning through the staff as a ranged attack powerful on the order of a shot from a stalker boltgun and has enough practice to fire both it and his bolter while moving, saturating his targets in fire before closing in for the kill.

Off duty apparel consisting of a white t shirt with the chapter symbol on the front, a pair of green fatigue pants and black combat boots. A space marine, especially a librarian, has little time to rest so Simus does not wear this apparel often so he enjoys the time he does. he changes into a pair of mesh shorts to sleep in.

Augmentations: None. Simus' body has remained whole through his centuries in the Emperor's service.

Personality: Intelligent, creative and unusually compassionate for a space marine. Simus treats almost everyone he meets as an equal, from his own battle brothers to the serfs who serve them to the guardsmen they fight alongside. He is eager to socialize off the battlefield and is fiercely protective while on it, often putting himself at great risk to protect his brothers and going to great lengths to protect or evacuate human civilians and soldiers. He has a talent for kindling hope in those he fights with, especially imperial guardsmen, and will even take time to comfort them when the situation is safe enough. Some of his brothers see his compassion as foolish and even dangerous but others see him as a beacon of hope, an example to his brothers who choose to simply be angels of death. However, Simus has a burning, almost irrational hatred for chaos space marines and daemons thanks to the machinations of chaos almost destroying his chapter. Simus will throw his normally cautious tactics to the wind when engaging chaos in favor of an all out assault and will often lose himself in bloodlust, especially against daemons.

Biography: Simus was born in the underhive of Hive Jericho on the hive world of Malice in the Boros Paladins' home system of Progressio. His parents Marie and Jonah lived in a ruined shanty protected by a local gang. Jonah fixed and maintained their weapons and Marie cooked and cleaned for them. When Simus was six years old the shanty was overrun by mutants trying to escape a large scale arbites raid and almost everyone was killed but Simus and his mother survived. They survived by running, hiding and living off scraps until his mother was raped and murdered by another gang two years later. With no one left to care for him Simus had to look out for himself, running, hiding and stealing whatever he needed to survive. But when he was ten his luck started to change. The Boros Paladins had come down to the underhive to look for recruits and Simus was one of several children who decided to follow them, awestruck and curious of the giants in red and white armor and with guns the size of a grown-up that made anything they touched explode. About twenty of the children were fast and clever enough to follow the marines all the way to the great staircases which led into the middle hive and it was there that the astartes acknowledged them. They told the children that they were space marines, warriors of the Emperor who destroyed all of his enemies and that by surviving the journey to the upper level they had proven themselves worthy to become recruits of the chapter. All of the children accepted and were taken by thunderhawk to Progressio and then to its moon Boros.

It was like entering heaven itself. None of them had ever seen the sky let alone space and now they were being carried away on a massive ship to parts unknown. They had also known more comfort than they ever thought possible. They were given clean clothes, a hot bath, a haircut, a warm bed to sleep in and more food than they had even know existed. When they arrived at Progressio they felt as if they had entered paradise itself. It was a warm, bright civilized world akin to Ancient Terra tens of thousands of years ago and its people enjoyed safe, comfortable lives with a strong sense of duty. Simus was a wellspring of questions and interjections for the entire four-day trip but when he saw this beautiful world, so very different from his own, he was silent. He knew, deep within his soul that this was where he wanted to live or at the very least fight for. Something so rare and precious as an imperial world that was truly safe needed the space marines and they needed new blood. Simus would be that new blood.

Simus passed every trial that was thrown at the aspirants and as his psychic abilities manifested he was chosen to be recruited into the librarium. No one had found him wanting and he had proved himself to be strong enough to face any challenge and eager to learn everything he could. During his time as a lexicanum he read every single book in the chapter's librarium that was permitted to him and then demanded more. Of particular fascination to him is pre-imperial history covering Old Night and the Golden Age of Technology. The fact that humanity could rise to such incredible power that the average man wanted for nothing and then to lose it all to their own automaton creations struck Simus as both tragic and infuriating and the rebuilding of humanity during the Great Crusade filled him with hope and respect for The Emperor. The Horus Heresy filled him with hatred for Chaos and sorrow for The Emperor and his legions. Knowing so much about the past has given Simus some disdain for the current imperium and some contempt for organizations such as the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Inquisition who seem to rule by fear and secrecy and allow their own hubris or mistrust of others to destroy ancient knowledge of science and technology. However, Simus is fully confident that given time and proper leadership with faith in the Emperor humanity can regain its glory days and all that it has lost over the last forty thousand years and he has made it his mission in this universe to make that happen.

Now, two hundred years later, Simus leads a strike cruiser and a space marine company to the space hulk Tomb of Madmen. He is eager to secure the vessel for the Emperor and to explore and catalogue every last piece of it, from the largest pieces of archeotic to the smallest rivet. He has read all of the legends of the infamous hulk and is eager to learn the truth about it. He hopes to share anything he finds with the rest of the imperium and secretly hopes to find ancient STC machines inside. If such a machine could be found and it were fully functional the imperium could build everything it could ever want and his dream would be realized. It would be the holiest of relics, a machine that could spread and replicate infinite knowledge. But would the tech-priests who will surely take possession of it be willing to share that knowledge? Simus has tried not to think about that. For now he can only do his duty and worry about the future as it comes.

High Elf of the Skyrim wilds
    Name: Ashmire Valkyrie
    Race: Adeptus Astartes
    Chapter: Dark Hunters
    Rank: Captain
Chapter armour pattern: Mark VI Corvus power armour
Weapons: Plasma pistol; power weapon; auxiliary grenade launcher
Misc: Formerly of the Ultramarines chapter, Captain (formerly sergeant) Ashmire Valkyrie fell amidst the plague of tyranids at the battle for Macragge but was found, gripping onto life with nothing more than sheer unyielding will by a member of the order of Mechanicus. After years of slipping in and out of consciousness, many a time swearing death to those who dared to submerge his body into the hull of a dreadnought, the Space Marine went rogue, disappearing under the radar for what seemed forever.
Soon, the rogue Astartes appeared on the maps of the Imperium, and dismissed the fear within the armies of the Emperor as he had assumed Captain of the first company of the dwindling Dark Hunters: a chapter announced deplorable after their gene seed was destroyed. Now, Ashmire travels with the company of the most ferocious Space Marines hellbent on destroying the forces of chaos and xenos alike with undetterable rage.

Captain Valkyrie carries the Powermace: a weapon lighter than any powersword capable of tearing the very earth beneath him asunder, decorated with the skulls of orcs and tyranids.

Notable achievements: Escorted a sample of the gene seed of the chapter Adeptus Astartes out of Macragge during the Hive Fleet Leviathan invasion; Single-handedly deterred a rogue Chaos Space Marine battlecruiser after losing all of his Dark Hunter battle-brothers after boarding the ship

A renegade captain eh? pethaps he should be reminded of the Emperors light. will he be a new arrival to the hulk or an older resident? And it was Hive Fleet Behemoth that invaded Macragge by the way.

Ah yes, you're quite right - been so long since I have read any of the books or even touched the tabletop game
I see Valkyrie as the Imperium version of Kharn - unpredictable, an enemy of the enemy more than an ally.
In this story he would be informed of the 'invitation' and would be an invader, perhaps seeking technology to renew the Dark Hunters chapter only to plunge them into chaos?

Perhaps. An Imperial Kharn would be quit interesting but would definately be considered renegade if not Excommunicate Traitoris by the Ordo Hereticus and would be hunted down by loyalist forces.

    Or, at least they'd try.

Dark Hunters operate close to the eye of terror, probably the first line of defense, if any Marines come piling onto them, who is to say whom is renegade?:D Kharn the Betrayer is probably one of my favourite characters so turning Captain Valkyrie into something similar (along the lines of Azariah Kyras) but not too deep into the world of chaos - a renegade marine looking to restore his ideal of the Imperium and what better way than to exploit the greatest machinery and mechanics of man?

I'd like to look through the eyes of an Astartes hellbent on his own desires yet not quite ready to kill his own bretheren

I'd be okay with that, though I'm a bit surprised. I could see Salthar as an Ulthwe warlock.

    The Shadow in the Dark.
Well, I recently read the novel Corax: Nevermore, by Gav Thorpe. And I found it intriguing. Of course, on table top, I always play Dark Eldar. I might also have a second character from the Night Lords' traitor legion. I've read up on them quite a bit as well, and they seem like one of the few legions who aren't bat plops insane. Besides maybe the Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion.
