Stuck in a loop.

Well, I stole some things and every time I leave this place I get attacked by hired thugs, I can never beat them or run away, and I don't have any saves of before this happened for some reason so I always go back to the part where I get attacked. What should I do? I made some good progress and I don't want to lose it >_>
