Skyrim, And The Favorite/Hotkey System You Might Not Even Know About

(Originally posted to my website, 12/19/11) Check out the link to read it there, along with the horde of other Skyrim stuff I've posted!

*NOTE - this was originally posted in the tutorial section, however it got <200 hits in a few days, marginally less then the stuff in the general forum gets. This is worth everyone seeing, as its become quite clear from the feedback I've received that I'm nowhere near the only one who didn't know about this stuff.

Let me just start with a bit of a frustrated rant. I've probably played half a dozen characters to level 30+ in Skyrim - tonight I retired a level 34 assassin, because for whatever reason the save became too buggy.

NPC's wouldn't talk to each other. I had a few quests (that I had done previously) bug for no reason. Things weren't spawning, and even a brand new bug - I killed a boss, his corpse was on the ground in front of me. I could hit it with spells, shouts, etc. to move it around, but the game would NOT let me loot it, no matter where I positioned the corpse. It dropped an item for the next step of the quest. Very cool. The bugs on this save were bu far the worst and most wide spread of any I've had before - it was multiple quests, NPC's, etc. Really terrible. Moving on.

What I wanted to write about this go-around was the favorite/hotkey system, which you might not even know exists unless you've played previous Elder Scrolls games, and/or you've accidentally stumbled across it during your adventures in Skyrim.

For whatever reason, this forum won't let me post the full article with screen shots to go along with the explanations. Without them, this won't make much sense. Head on over to my site and check out the rest if you want to figure out how to actually use the hotkey/favorite system, or just use it a little better.

Good article... although I don't use favoriting system much... Maybe is the reason you mentioned... I kinda get lost... In Oblivion were better hotkeys. :)

The gaming manual for the PC does reference hot keys 1-8 on page 2 where it shows the keyboard layout for game controls, but fails to mention how to hot key items or make any further reference to them anywhere else.

This is an example of inexcusably incompetent editing on Bethesda's part in writing the manual. At my job someone would have been fired for making an error like that.

Yeah, Oblivion's radial-type hotkey system was far better - and as I recall it, explained early on. You didn't have to almost accidentally discover it. Glad this helped people out.

Eh, not really on consoles. It was faster, but pretty annoying with the D-pad.

Good find though. I'm sure it will help lots of people to read this.

I hope so - I've gotten over 100 emails and messages on different forums with people either shocked and/or baffled that this kind of thing wasn't pointed out in the game itself unless you accidentally discovered it on your own.

Hopefully people continue to find this and have an easier time sorting through the game.

Also, you can download a few mods to make it even easier to hotkey stuff (like mouse buttons, etc.) There's a few out there depending on what hardware you use, so I can't post a general link - but look around, if you're like me, you might like the main stuff all within reach on the mouse!

Have to say I completely agree with your article, the hotkey system is really infuriating, especially for us console players who only get to hotkey 2 seperate skills / spells / weapons, you have to keep pausing the game to trawl through your favorites menu to switch spells which not only destroys the immersion but is incredibly fecking annoying. I don't know how or why Bethesda came up with the god-awfull piss poor system they did but it's ruining an otherwise fantastic game for me because I'm finding the only way I can play the game is with a warrior and even THEN it has to be a 2h sword warrior because you can't have a bow selected to one hot key and a sword AND shield selected for a second hotkey ( you need a separate hotkey for your sword and for your shield....WTF ?? ) and even THEN you still have to pause the game to select health potions or restoration magic if you need a health boost in combat. Come on Bethesda, were you hungover the day you designed the UI for consoles, at least with PC you get 10 hotkeys, spare a thought for us poor console players with only 2 !! ( console gamers getting raped by software developers ??? Surely not ?? ;) )
