It's easy. Just get the DLC and go to Dawnstar, Morthal and Falkreath and talk to the Steward/Jarls. You can customize and end up with some cool stuff. I have 3 now (one for my dark arts, one for my family and one just for me!). Just remember to get a steward ASAP or you'll be trekking for material. OH! And stock up on iron!

I have a house now for my family in falkreath hold. I had a steward and housecarl but a dragon, a giant, and 3 vampires attacked at the same time so I lost both my steward and housecarl. And if that's not enough, I lost my bard, cow and horse to that dragon and giant! Btw my spouse, alea the huntress, took down all 3 vampires :D (Werewolf style!!!!!!!!)

I got heart fire and I came back to my house just to find a giant stomping around my stable not hurting anyone but I thought it was going to kill me so I went to my balcony got my bow out and shot him turns out he didn't like that so he decided to kill my cow it only happened a few days ago but now I feel really guilty see the dead cow every time I go into my house

If you get cows, giants come...And to get rid of the dead cow, buy another one. The new one replaces the dead one.

Oh well, you can always get a new cow (you have no idea how many cows, horses and chickens I've gone through at my prop outside Whiterun). I always get new ones though 'cause my steward/house-carl is useless and, apparently it's the horse and cow that do all the defending. It also explains why I keep coming home to dead bandits.

Almost any follower can be a steward as far as I know (I used my house-carl - they can do double duty). Build you're own furnishings. Once you've done the room there's a workbench in it and you can manufacture your own. You could ask your steward (once you have one) to furnish your room for you, but they take FOREVER! where as you can furnish it yourself using the workbench within minutes. Don't forget the cellar! A forge is invaluable (and, if you're a collector like me - the safes are great!).

Just don't ever walk away from the brotherhood 'cause, if you do, Shadowmere will stop following you around and you'll have to go all the way back to one of the Sanctuaries to retrieve him.

I found that out! He went awol after I stopped doing the dark mother's bidding but I happened to find him standing outside the Dawnstar Sanctuary when I wandered past the other day.

I'll stick with Frost from Riften. I've killed him, dragons have killed him, sabre cats have killed him and, somehow he keeps reappearing at the Riften Stables. Ahh... Frost... I wuv u! :)

Bandits killed all three of my chickens! The bastards! And they were really hard to defeat. Stupid Lydia just stood there, and Rayya wasn't much help either. I got totally hammered a number of times..by BANDITS?!?! Sheesh! I was so cut about the chickens.. I could only find two dead and thought maybe the third had survived, but no, I found it later  And my poor cow is now a nervous wreck. Then I turn around and my kids are running all over the place like nothing happened. So I sent them inside.

Another time I had a Fire dragon, and I was only level 10 for this character at the time, but I guess playing on expert level they throw everything at you.

OMG... Frost re-spawns????? YAY!!!!!!!!! How long does it take?
on a weird note: you know the guy you take Frost off? he kept appearing at the Whiterun stables where Frost stands. Like he was trying to steal him back.... "I've got my eye on you mister.."

He just keeps appearing at the Riften stables (or if I fast travel of course), unless I kill him myself. It's weird. I know what you mean about the guy I took Frost from. He stood outside the Whiterun stables for the longest time until he was arbitratily killed by the red guards that were after the "princess" along with the stable master after a few months. He didn't steal anything, just stood there being surly.

I ran back to the Riften stables but no Frost  I loved that horse. Only consolation is that I can have one of the pretty Riften horses for free. I'll do the Dark Brotherhood quest so I can get Shadowmere :)

Oh I am seriously thinking about offing that guy. Frost is dead and he is still standing there at the Whiterun stables and he just annoys me. Maybe I'll cast Fury on him.. heh.

It doesn't matter if you have a Steward or a House-carl, at least in my experience. Sure your Steward helps against generic bandits, giants and wolves, but otherwise they're somewhat useless in terms of defense. By that I mean, if somebody decides to kidnap your spouse while you're off adventuring somewhere, your Steward most likely will let it happen while thinking "That's my Thane's spouse, not my Thane, so no skin off my nose, I should probably get back to sitting on that bench upstairs or mining ore, or eating bread".

Though once after my spouse was kidnapped, I couldn't find my Steward so I thought "maybe, just this once, he decided to try to help my spouse but couldn't and was kidnapped too". But no, I found him in my greenhouse, a place where he never goes any other time. I like to think he was trying to hide due to shame/embarrassment. "I am your sword AND your shield, please don't fire me".

Sorry but I read the title and I was thinking this was about something different.

First thought: oh Cicero what did you do to the children..
