Anyone familiar with Square these days knows how ridiculously long they take to create one game. So it should come as no surprise that if a recent comment from Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase is correct, it'll be at least 2017 before the company feels it'll be ready to do serious work on the project.

"I believe that this year will still be a year of preparations for Final Fantasy VII Remake," Kitase said to the magazine Famitsu, reported by Siliconera. "I'd like to create a new kind of value for the hardware that is the PlayStation 4 for our next announcement."

Since an entire year feels like more than enough time to make a few sketches and plot out areas on graph paper, it's our sincere hope that this is some kind of translation quirk and that Kitase means actual development, not "preparation" in the "little boy preparing to do his homework" sense.

It's worth pointing out that Square has already announced they would be using Unreal Engine 4 to create the graphics for Final Fantasy VII Remake, which in theory should cut down production time. In theory.
