Remember the year 2012, when Kickstarter could do no wrong? That was when Pillars of Eternity was first proposed as a new action RPG for computer gamers. Fashioned in the tradition of Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment, the game involves a heavily customizable hero or heroine from one of six distinct races traversing the overhead-viewed fantasy world of Eora. The project gained over 70,000 backers and racked up $4.5 million dollars in donations for its developers, Obsidian Entertainment and Paradox Interactive, prior to its release.

For the developers of the game, putting their dreams into fully budgeted, heavily polished reality is quite the feeling. “Moments like these feel surreal when they finally arrive,” said Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian's CEO. “Today is the culmination of two years’ hard work." Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive, added “It’s a rare privilege to get to be part of a passionate project like Pillars of Eternity. Watching the Obsidian team pour their hearts into Pillars has been inspiring for all of us, and we’re thrilled to be launching the game with them today.”

Backers past a certain monetary threshold will get the game automatically for free, but for the rest of the curious, Pillars of Eternity can be purchased for PC, Mac or Linux at the price of $44.99. RPG fans will be able to get an introduction to Pillars of Eternity in a live stream with Game Director and Lead Designer Josh Sawyer, scheduled for 3pm PT / 23:00 CET on Twitch.TV, at twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive.
