I don't know if anyone else was having trouble figuring out how to pick up objects in the console versions of the game with the new control scheme but I was. Anyway I just figured it out and wanted to share, on PS3 you just aim at whatever you want to pick up and hold down the x button for about a second and then you can manipulate and move the object in the environment. I'm sure this would work in the x-box version as well , just substitute in whatever button is the 'activate' button. I hope this will be helpful to someone!
