I 'm way past this piont , but just noticed from another post I never got a housecarl from riften, has this happened to anyone eles?

Did you buy the house then ask for one? Once you buy the house then talk to the Jarl or his steward and they give you Lydia either there or in the house. But you need to speak to the Jarl or steward again.

Actually you are incorrect Jeff, Lydia is given in Whiterun, and she comes to you automaticallly even w/o buying the house. The housecarl in Riften is Iona and you only get the housecarl once you become thane in that town. Whiterun is the only town you become thane in prior to buying property. So in Riften if you bought honeyside but didn't complete the missions to become thane then that is why you don't have a housecarl

Yeah my mistake! I thought Whiterun was specified and missed the Rifkin part...

works the same way in for the other houses. You have to buy the house first as part of the condition to become thane. except in whiterun
