You hear a lot about crowdfunding projects that fail to meet their goals, don't turn in a satisfactory product, or just turn out to be scams. How about a fan-funded project where, for once, everything turned out RIGHT? The development team received more than enough cash, they rewarded all their backers, they turned in the great game they promised AND it was good enough to become one of the most popular Steam games of 2015? That's the story of Pillars of Eternity, the RPG from Obsidian Entertainment that now has a behind-the-scenes documentary based on it.

In “The Road to Eternity,” Obsidian's talented team of developers Josh Sawyer, Adam Brennecke and CEO Feargus Urquhart who have contributed to such notable franchises as Fallout, Star Wars, and Dungeons & Dragons pull back the curtain on the Pillars of Eternity development story, and share unguarded thoughts and testimonials about the bleak lows and the dizzying highs of their journey. The documentary offers a great deal of inside information for fans, as well as a rare look into what crowdfunding can mean to an independent game developer.

Granted, since Obsidian managed to get $4.5 million for Pillars of Eternity, their results aren't typical. But their story is proof that the crowdfunding model can produce great content in the hands of those who know what they're doing. "The Road To Eternity" is watchable on-demand at Vimeo, and can be purchased for 99 cents.
