Dunmer are one of my favourite races because of the whole refugee angle they've got going on in Skyrim. Many of the Dunmer NPCs you meet in the game are regular farmers and shopkeepers who are just trying to get by making an honest living, and have to put up with a lot of the racial prejudice that's going around in a time of war. And when playing as a Dunmer, you get to feel like an underdog who is becoming a hero and achieving great things. The Dunmer don't seem as proud as other races. The other races are either boasting about how strong and fearless they are in combat, or they are trying to set a good example by making everyone civilized, or they miss how beautiful their warm homeland is compared to the harsh Skyrim landscape. The dark elves don't seem to care much about their homeland and would rather live anywhere except some volcanic wasteland, and are keen to start a new life without thinking about their history. I think this contrasts them greatly from all the other NPCs who still want to cling to some piece of their past.

Of course, when playing as the Dragonborn and unlocking ancient Nordic words of power, it always makes more sense to be a Nord. But it's nice to sometimes play as a race who doesn't feel compelled to follow any of the main quests or to pick a side in the war.
