Same happened here.
Probably because you have a "Bounty" in Riverwood. I broke into a house (picklock) and the owner attacked me, so I in turn, like any good adventurer, killed him. After that, all residents attacked if I got too close.
However, after I paid my bounty in White Run and finished a quest there, the residents in Riverwood no longer attacked and interacted as I needed them to. Foolish commoners! The day will come when I destroy their poor town for their insolence! LOL
